New brand of classically designed Belgian ales from Herk-de-Stad, brewed (“with natural ingredients”) at De Graal. Very thick and frothy, cobweb-lacing, egg-white, stable head on an initially clear, pale orange-tinged “old gold” beer, turning misty with sediment. Aroma of banana, clove, very explicit spiciness reminiscent of anise and even eucalyptus, old potatoes, ‘jenever’, fried apples, touch DMS (overcooked Brussels sprouts), coriander seed, ripe pear, dried orange peel, old cotton cloth, bubblegum. Sweet onset, banana and ripe pear notes, medium carbonation with relatively full, but slick and very rounded mouthfeel; supple bready and cereally malt core with a layer of honeyish residual sugariness on top and spiced by coriander in the end, but it does not stop there: soon this strong ethereal herbalness of anise and eucalyptus returns, overseeing an otherwise bubblegummy, ‘jenever’-ishly warming, sweetish finish with just a subtle dose of floral hop bitterness. Essentially a standard tripel with a herb added, maybe allspice or star anise? Too sweet, in any case – even if I would have digged a spiced tripel like this, I would have preferred it to at least show some more hop bitterness.

Huge, dense just lightly yellowish head over clear, lively carbonated golden beer. Rather fresh nose, ginger, mint, camphor, lavender, thyme; bit of pale malts and just a touch toasted. Again the herbs playing with the malts. Even more difficult to say what herbs - seem to be getting lavender and ginger again. Lightly caramelized sugar in the finish. Herbs are pretty pharmaceutical and this tires quickly. Good carbonation, medium bodied, bit slick. As said, the herbs are just a tad too obtrusive to be fully enjoyable, IMO.

Pours rather unclear blonde, not much head. Smell is sharp, intense spices ( ginger ) . taste is sharp, bit bitter, sweet, tripel aspects do show. Mild but noticable ginger. It works surprisingly well. Decent carbo.
