Ernest George, this beer’s namesake, was a well-known country house architect who worked on the Welbeck Abbey between 1900 and 1901. He was responsible for remodelling the interior of the Oxford Wing after it was decimated by fire.

We’ve used a balanced blend of traditional roasted malts to brew a deep ruby ale with distinctively bitter-sweet chocolate notes. British Bramling Cross hops provide a subtly blackcurrant note in the background.

Cask at Standing Order, Derby. Pours a deep ruby with minimal scummy off-white head and good lacing. There’s malts and nuts in the aroma. In the mouth there is a little sweetness and a creamy texture, but the main sensation is of malts. There’s also chocolate, dark fruit and raisins with some hints of cola coming through later. Finish is fruity and slightly dry. This is a decent ESB style beer – maybe lacking a bit in body.

Cask @ Rising Sun, Sheffield. Mahogany-red with a creamy head. Certainly dark-malty, but not getting the chocolate through on this sipping occasion.

A cask conditioned half-pint in The Pheasant, Wellington Shropshire on 9th Nov 2016. Deep ruby with a smooth beige coloured crown on top. Dark berries and hedgerow fruits in both the aroma and taste, heavy bodied but easy drinking: liked it.

Cask (@The Flower Pot, Maidstone, Kent): deep ruby-amber coloured, presumably clear, small tanned head with a little lace, leathery-malty nose with dried blackberries in the background; mild but distinctive bitter-sweet flavour, light bodied; really lingering dryish (with a shy acidity) maltbitter and ashy finish, some dried fruits included. Fine Ale, but I thought it is a Stout…
