An award-winning golden bitter from an all malt brew, with Styrian Golding hops added at various stages, to give a classic hop flavour and aroma.

A bitter beer of great character, appealing to those drinkers who really appreciate their beer and are looking for quality.

Launched in 1995 as ‘September Ale’, Jennings Cocker Hoop has become hugely popular, particularly with Lake District tourists in summer

The name is derived from ‘Cock-a Hoop’, an old custom of removing the cock (or spigot) from a barrel and resting it on the hoop of the cask before commencing a drinking bout, but was changed to reflect the brewery’s location on the banks of the River Cocker.

Cask at the Globe, Hanslope. Yellow gold. Extremely cloudy at first (Fastcask?) but clears with a full white head. Aroma has a pleasant and unexpected sweetness. Bananas and cream. Taste is unexceptional - sweetness hidden by a bullying bitter flavour. Decent enough but composition is lazy and uninspiring.

Half pint, hand pulled cask at (JDW) Hamilton Hall, Liverpool Street. No head, bit of lacing to the glass, clear amber body colour. Malt-fruity aroma. Bread-like malts in flavour together with dusty hops. Nice bitter finish. Standard English bitter (London, 31.07.2011).

Cask at the Cleveland Arms, London, after cycling 15 minutes through a driving rain. I’m greeted by Blur, Coffee and TV, wafting from what seems to be a solitary speaker. The beer itself pours a clear, rich gold with a foamy, white cap. The aroma holds toasty grains and notes of caramel. Flavor is sweet and bready, further notes of caramel (though light), some faint fruits and nuts, a dusting of earthy dirt. Light in body with fine carbonation. The finish is restrained and fairly well balanced, albeit slightly lacking in what one might call ’complexity’. Just touches of bread and slight citrus preserves, hazelnuts, a little earth. All in all not bad. The peanuts, though, are excellent tonight.

On tap, pours golden. Aroma and flavour of citrus, with toasted malt and bittering hops on the finish. Not too good.

Cask at the Bridge, Kingswinford. Pours a hazy golden with a small head. The nose is floral hops with some citrus. Had a floral hoppy start, slightly piney with some sweetness and a medium bitter finish.
