Pouring a deep, golden colour with wafts of sweet honey, Humdinger is a multi-award winning speciality ale. The enticing scent comes from the Mexican aroma honey which comes through in subtle undertones and balances impeccably with the traditional bitter notes and malt. Humdinger first came to life after winning a top brewing competition in 2004.
Full of character and flavour, the use of fine English malt and citrus whole hops lead to a well-rounded, lightly hopped and satisfyingly refreshing ale. It’s lightly carbonated, smooth and brewed at 4.1%, making it an ideal choice for a laid-back evening or day session.
A Humdinger indeed.

It would seem every other brewery in the UK has a Honey beer, this is Holts attempt. My brown 500ml bottle had only two weeks to go before its best before date (23 June 2010). The beer was poured (chilled) into a vase shaped pint glass (badged, Old Speckled Hen). The body is a dull golden/amber in colour, a thin off-white head sat on top. Mexican aroma honey? Has been used according to the bottle label, I could just about sence hints of honey, along with some citrus hoppiness. The taste was bland and uninteresting, there is a slight presence of honey within the flavour and a mini hop bittereness to counter it. Sadly they just don’t blend too well, the malts come into the flavours towards the end of the mouthfeel. To be fair, everything grew in size (aroma and flavour) as the chillness eased off and the beer warmed, I enjoyed it a whole lot better during the second half of the review.

50cl bottle. Decent white head. Clear golden pour. Nice enough beer but I was expecting more.

Not an unpleasant aroma, but it’s only very faint. Looks decent enough. I like the taste but there’s not a lot to it. Once it’s out of your mouth the taste is pretty much gone and it doesn’t leave much after it. The taste is nice but the fact that it dissipates so quickly makes it seem a bit bland.

Bottled 500ml (K-Kamppi, BB 12/2011, ABV 4.1%)
Clear amber color, small white head, some lace. Aroma has light honey and citrus. Light body. Flavor has some light citrusy hoppyness, but otherwise honey is dominating the flavor. Light palate. Although has honey in it, not overly sweet. Oily mouthfeel. Light lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. Another pretty boring but clean golden ale.

500ml bottle at 4.1%. Pours amber with a thin, frothy head. Aroma is honey and pale malt, a bit thin. Taste is pale lagery to start, some corn in the finish. A bit crap, really.

Bottle shared with Lyoli. Pours a vibrant orange-gold with a modest, foamy white head. Malty aroma with some nutmeg or something and some orange hops. Very sweet, with maybe some sugary syrup, light bread, earth, orange citrus and flower bitterness. Light to medium in body with lively carbonation. A reasonably well balanced finish with very subtle clover honey, more bread and some further citrus hops. Not a terrible beer by any means.

Bottled. A pale golden beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of malt as well as a touch of honey. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and caramel, leading to a dry honey finish.
