It was a long, long time ago, that the Hofbräu Maibock was brewed for the first time: In 1614 the bottom-fermented beer specialty filled beer steins for the first time. Even today, Munich's oldest bock beer is still as popular as ever with its full-bodied, malty flavor. The relatively high alcohol content of 7.2% Vol. doesn’t do things half-way – and satisfies, especially honest beer connoisseurs.

Review based on the BJCP2021 guidelines (style 4C). Bottle 50 cl - Batch 09:47 (BB 07.12.2023). AROMA: medium to medium-high malt aroma with toasty and some maillard products. initial low metallic note that vanishes. no hops detected. clean lager profile. slight alcohol note. APPEARANCE: light amber color and translucent. medium creamy white head with medium retention. TASTE: medium malt character with the same profile as the aroma (grainy-sweet, lightly toasty and with some maillards). clean lager profile. medium bitterness with a dry finish with some bitterness. MOUTHFEEL: medium body with medium carbonation. slight alcoholic warmth. OVERALL: a very nice Maibock.

On tap at Craft Beer oasis, Crewe. Pours a dark copper with a small foamy off-white head. The aroma has a subtle mix of bananas and spices. Bananas again to the fore in the mouth. Accompanied by cloves initially, but very quickly this switches to cinnamon and malts. Switches from sweet to slightly bitter too. Plus some hints of rye grains and alcoholic strength starts to show through. Finish is slightly spicy. This is reasonable though not wildly exciting.

Bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clear amber with a finger of off-white head that lingers. Toasted caramel and light mineral aromas on the nose. Palate is similar. Very nice spring drinker.

Bottle. Clear amber with a 2cm near white head. Malty aroma with singed toffee, hints of spices. And then it's fine, if plain. Sweet with a decent - if dull - smack of bitterness at the end. Lacks soul.
