Backlog rating from RBESG 2008, grand tasting as Hantversbryggeriet Klosterøl: Cloudy brown, creamy head. Chocolate, light smoke, roast, citric finish. Mellow mouthfeel.

Swedish quadrupel (the name ’Klosteröl’ says it all), in the (I assume original) 8.5% ABV version, older bottle from De Molen’s shop. Medium sized, lightly lacing, pale greyish beige, moussy head retaining very well on the edges and leaving a veil of greyish foam in the middle; translucently bronze robe with rusty burgundy hue, hazy. Seductively rich, fragrant bouquet of sweet cherries, amaretto, sourish passion fruit, medlar, cooked rhubarb, lots of toffee, brown rum, liquorish, stewed pear, banana, port, candied dates, blue plum, brown sugar melting on a hot pancake, redcurrant, cooked egg, red cabbage with brown sugar but not in the DMS way, dusty earth, very old dried sage and a faint whiff of coffee powder as well as a slight ’rusty’ touch of onsetting oxidation. Red fruits in the onset, sourish (redcurrant, blackberry, passion fruit) and, more subtly, sweetish (apple, raisin), with medium carbo; smooth, treacherously light body, fluffy, a little bit oily, with a caramelly sweet main character adorned with nutty and even bitterly toasted edges, while the initial fruity esters keep dancing on top of it without dominating too much. Rich, warming finish, ongoing bittersweet malts, slick with the initial subtle fruit tartness continuing and drying a bit, a dash of herbal ’background’ hops providing some balance against the malt sweetness, and of course the expected glow of warming, liqueurish alcohol. Brown sugar-like, yet unobtrusive sweetness lingers a bit, but somehow does not become too cloying, as it is being balanced by equally long and equally soft lingering basic tartness. A very subtle coffeeish accent accompanies this but never really comes out of its secret hiding place - less so than in e.g. Struise’s Pannepot. As a whole, this beer reminds me a bit of an old Westvleteren (8 or 12), already a little bit thinned by age and showing the first yet unmistakable signs of oxidation, so I assume this was better when young. Regardless of these signs of progressing age, however, this is a well-balanced, rich and ’wealthy’ quadrupel, exemplary for its style without topping the very best ones; the oxidation in the nose was subtle enough to add an extra layer of sherryish complexity without becoming bothersome, so I don’t think this would benefit from very long periods of cellaring. Enjoyed it though, but perhaps a bit more in the nose than in the mouth, I must add.
