Fruit-forward hops take this IPA to the tropics.

Beer Camp is the ultimate brewing experience. We invite beer fans into our brewery nearly every week to design their own beer and then we bring it to life. Each spring, we’ll feature one of our favorite collaborations from the previous year. This year’s selection features intensely aromatic hop varietals rich with the flavors of the tropics. We use Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado hops to create bright fruit-forward flavors of mango, papaya and bitter orange.

Bottle. Clean, simple and straight forward IPA with notes of caramel and (obviously) tropical fruits.

Flaska från SB. Fin doft av tropisk frukt. Mango, papaya. Ren smak med gräs, mango, citrus, papaya. Lite oljig, måttlig sötma och beska. Snygg ren smakbild. Kanske väl polerad fast humlen har säkert mattas en del sen tappning. Snygg och god.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Hazy golden, rich firm head. Mango and papaya dominate the nose, just as promised on the back label. Mid sweet with medium body and clean mouthfeel. Grapefruit and mango keeps dominating into a log bitter finish. Basic, but functional malt backbone covered in a wealth of modern hops.

(355ml bottle from Systembolaget, bottled Dec 29/15) Pours clear pale orange with a moderate lasting white head and lace. Aroma has lots of bitter citrus peel, orange varietals and grapefruit, underripe mango, caramel malt and oxidation creeping in. Flavour is odd, sweet pale malt with a bit of caramel and bread, and overripe mango and papaya, something bitter and pine/herbal from the hops towards the back end. Abrupt fairly dry astringent finish, fairly bitter, tinny and a bit oxidized, grain touches. Medium bodied, average carb. Bit of a mess, unfortunately rather too old but the elements seem to clash, sweet and malty. Many a ’normal’ IPA feels more tropical.

355ml Bottle - Amber/dark golden in colour. Pine, peach, lemon and grapefruit in the aroma. Hoppy taste with toffee, grapefruit and peach detected. Nice but not particularly ’tropical’.

This is one of the first times I feel that SN has failed on a hoppy beer. Maybe fail is a strong word, but basically, the hop profile is a bit of a mess here. It doesn’t come through as cleanly tropical fruit, per their aims. It hits all the hop quadrants, variously piney, citrus (grapefruit and tangerine), spicy, herbal flavors in the finish, and just a little tropical fruit somewhere in there. Malts are dry, not doing much except supporting the hop aromatics. True golden color.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a clear gold with a finger and half of white foam that lingers. Solid lacing as well. Papaya and mango really stand out on the nose with some grass. Above average carbonation with good malt-balance but feels light and refreshing on the palate. Some grapefruit like stickiness as well, but not syrupy at all. More papaya on the palate with some light pine resin on the finish. Good bitterness, but not overly so. Tasty. --- Beer merged from original tick of Beer Camp Tropical IPA (2016) on 12 Mar 2016 at 21:18 - Score: 7. Original review text: Papaya and mango on the nose. Scratchy bitterness. Great nose average taste.
