Fruit-forward hops take this IPA to the tropics.

Beer Camp is the ultimate brewing experience. We invite beer fans into our brewery nearly every week to design their own beer and then we bring it to life. Each spring, we’ll feature one of our favorite collaborations from the previous year. This year’s selection features intensely aromatic hop varietals rich with the flavors of the tropics. We use Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado hops to create bright fruit-forward flavors of mango, papaya and bitter orange.

Bottle. Clear gold with a large white head. Aroma of green and just ripe mango, lime, mandarins. And with a bit of firm pale malt sitting behind, that’s how it tastes too. I like the way the tropical fruit is not allowed to become blousy or lush. Not too sweet - enough to fill it out a little, not enough to need higher bitterness. Clean with punchy hops but not otherwise distinctive.

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp: Tropical IPA 6.7% I picked this recent Japan release at Craft Beer Base yesterday as it was prominently labeled a Spring Seasonal. I’m a sucker for seasonals. Bottled on 1/13/2016 means it is almost two months old. It pours a nice glowing orange gold with a thick eggshell-white head of foam. The aroma lives up to the name, sweet malts and juicy mango/papaya tropical fruit notes. Medium bodied with a raspy carbonation. The flavor is pithy grapefruit rind & bitter before giving you a brief hit of residual sweetness. Nice.

Keg at Three John’s. It pours clear golden - amber with a thick white head. The nose is fresh, juicy, fruity, papaya, dried apricot, dried mango, peach yoghurt, bread and cream. The taste is crisp, firm bitterness, piney hop bite, grapefruit, pineapple, burnt grass, resinous, light astringency, peppery spice and some alcohol with a firm, dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty decent gear.

Bottle: Clear golden color, large white head and lots of lacing. Bright aroma of juicy fruity hops, good hop flavor. Moderate in bitterness and mildly sweet. Dangerously drinkable.

Pale yellow. Weird initial bitter flavors that are so astringent and raw that its hard to take. Terrible rude bitter brew. So over the top it ruins my tasting ability for an hour. Somebody give me a lager as a chaser. What else can be said about this roto tiller brew except it is so impy ipa on style. My tongue cannot stand this. Mouth coating soapy oily BS. Cannot appreciate this style even after 15 years. This has go to be one of the most bitter IPAs I’ve tasted in quite a while. WHEW

Bottle. Earthy papaya/orange malt and grapefruit peel/pine aroma. Golden yellow with giant white head. Sweet mango-orange malt and moderately bitter earthy pine/grapefruit peel flavor. Nice body.

Pours a fairly clear copper, with minimal head. Aroma is quite grassy, almost weedy. Flavor is full of tropical fruit, especially mango. Pretty bitter underneath, with bitter finish.
