Nitro at the brewery. Dark brown red highlights. Large creamy brown nitro head, good retention. Aroma of roast, smoke, oats. Taste is roast, chocolate, oats, a bit of raisin. Medium bodied, low bitterness, low carb. Good and could be great with some tweaks.

On tap at Republic, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma brings out a nice dry oat character upfront, with lightly toasted malt. Flavour is along the same lines, with oats, toasted malt and some earthy, chalky notes. Missing a little sweetness and roast to achieve better depth. Okay.

Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a dark grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has strong dark grains and roasted malts with a slight creaminess. Flavor has dry, bitter dark grains with a good amount of roast and a hint of oats.

Sampled at GABF 2013. Pours an inky black with some thin, beige head. Nose is very nutty, very malty, burnt toast, chocolate, coffee. Malty flavor, brown sugar, nutty, toast, molasses. Malty, dry finish. Really nice. Very drinkable.

GABF 2013. Pours a deep brown appearance with a thin brown head. Creamy, coffee, dark chocolate, oaty aroma. Milk, dark chocolate, espresso, a touch fruity flavor with a bit of lingering bitterness. This one was very nice. Would love to drink again.

Draft. Deep brown/black body. Frothy, tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate. Hint of coffee and floral hops. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety/slick texture, lively carbonation. Rich and nicely balanced. It expertly avoids the saccharin sweetness of lesser made sweet stouts that are this rich.

ABR 2006. I don’t think Fitger’s makes a bad beer and this might be Minnesota’s premier brewer. The beer is black, and the aroma has roasted malt and light smoke. Some coffee in the flavor, more roasted grains and a moderately palate. It is very smooth and easy to drink.
