Cask at Bird in Hand, Stafford. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small tan head and good lacing. There’s roasted malts in the aroma, plus hints of dark fruits and coffee. In the mouth the initial impression is of both sweet and bitter characteristics. Flavour has roasted malts, cherries and liquorice with hints of chocolate, coffee and marmalade coming later. Finish is slightly fruity. This is decent.

Handpull cask at the Kings Head, Leicester. As 'Gothic Stout'. Dark brown, slightly opaque with a small tight beige/khaki head. Strong aroma of treacle and black liquorice. Taste is extremely sweet - almost sickly but for a bitterness sneaking in for the finish. Apothecary sweets in the finish among rhe herbal bitterness. Slight body with soft natural carbonation. Intriguing and delicious.

Really pleased to see the pump-clip after so many years: had to have one. Hand-pulled half-pint on 16th Oct 2013 at The Plough, Shifnal. Black, smooth, rich; chocolate and slightly burnt coffee notes ooze from the brew, this is one lovely beer. Is it really a Stout? Could it be a Porter? Don’t care, it’s just a very good beer.

Half pint handpulled at Market Porter, London Bridge. Black red-tinged body under a thin head. Dark malty aroma. Roasty impression with taste of raisin and dark chocolate. Well rounded mouthfeel (01.02.2007).
