Tap at the brewpub (backlog). Dark brown, close to black body with a medium sized tan head. Aroma has dark malt, mild roasted, bread, caramel, licorice and brown sugar. Flavor is medium sweet, roasted dark malt, bread, caramel, licorice, some dry fruit and balanced bitterness. Medium body and average aftertaste. Nice take on the traditional Christmas beer. The draught version made on the premises feels slightly more fruity and balanced than the bottle version brewed at Arendals.

330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 6.5%. Two dates on the bottle: 270917 (which I assume is the bottling date) and 270319 (which I assume is the "best before" date). No sign of smoke in aroma nor flavour, so it cannot be the 2017 version. Mahogany colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of moderately roast malts and nuts. Slightly dry flavour, again with moderately roast malts and nuts. Very moderate hops. A smooth porter, pleasant to drink, but not very much "character".

330ml cool little bottle bottle bought at Vinmonopolet, Langnes. A two-finger sized, creamy, fawn-coloured head slowly diminishing over a cloudy dark brown-orange coloured body. Nice artworks to the glassware. Attractive Yuletide aromas of dark bread and liquorice. Taste of roasted brown malts, bread, chocolate and dark fruits delicately overlaid by bitter liquorice. Prolonged ending. Fine bodied. Among the best Yuletide beers this season (Tromsø 31.12.2016).

01.12.2016, 0,33l bottle @ home:
Big fizzy-creamy longlasting head. Aroma is mild grainy, weeds, roasted grain, minerals, bark, burnt caramel, grass, spices. Taste is slightly dry spiced, weeds, bark, dark malts, booze, spices, soil, burnt caramel, paper. Medium to longlasting bitterness, slightly harsh and boozy mouthfeel. Not really my cup of tea.

Rødbrun klar med fingerhøyt beige skum. Lite lukt, noesjokolade og kaffe. Smaken derimot er kraftig og god. Julekrydder, nellik, kaffe, salmiakklskris og noe rosine med middels bitterhet som sitter godt.

Bottle. A hazy, brown beer with a small, dense, beige head. The aroma is quite roasted, with licorice, spices and nuts. Quite a lot of licorice too. It’s full-bodied, dryish and quite bitter, with some residual caramel-ish sweetness. Spices, lots of licorice and some piney hints. Nuts and some alcohol notes. Lasting roasted, nutty and spiced finish with a good dash of licorice. Quite nice this one, but a tad too bitter I think. Sure a fine one though. 161119
