Cassis-flavoured version of Ermitage's excellent hoppy porter Noire du Midi, draught at the brewery's premises, thanks Goedele! Creamy, pale coffee cream tan coloured, lacing, slowly opening head, very dark purplish burgundy robe, blackish in general appearance. Aroma of coffee beans and cappuccino, toasted walnuts, dried blackcurrant more than actual cassis, liquorice, black bitter chocolate, dried figs, old raisins, wet leather, bayleaf, hazelnuts. Low in sweetness, some raisin, dried blackcurrant flavour indeed with a soft sourish effect, fizzy carbonation, nut shell- and bitter chocolate-like malt body, dry and developing into coffeeish roasted bitterness, bit rooty and chicory-like in the end, while that mellow blackcurrant tartness keeps cutting through it; ends bitterish and sourish with a soft nutty sweetish note. I am not the greatest fan of fruit porters but this is exactly how I like them, I already fell in love with the basic beer but this, contrary to my expectations, is a wonderful elaboration on the theme.

Draft @ Ermitage Taproom, post-Quintessence 2018.

(On tap @ L'Ermitage, Brussels, May 1/18) Pours very dark brown with a decent-sized pale brown head and some soda bubbles. Notes of chocolate, roasted/toasted grains, dark bread, touches of nuts, light tart black currant, lightly to moderately sweet with a little roast bitterness. Light to medium body with overly high carbonation. I was a bit disappointed but I think that might come down to the mouthfeel as much as the flavours, coupled with desperately needing a break as 2 bar sessions and Quintessence preceded that visit to L'Ermitage.
