Are we the only ones to feel that the homogenization of the IPA style into hazy variations of the same theme? This is one of the questions behind the inspiration for our new Six Tastes IPA series exploring the portrayal of the six taste sensations (sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter, and umami) through a variety of IPAs. The first release explores sweetness, but don’t worry—we didn’t set out to make a sweet IPA with lactose and vanilla. Instead, we decided to explore two things: the “sweet” smelling and tasting nuances of hops and the bitter perception that hops can portray even without being boiled. To accomplish this, we crafted an IPA that is very low on bittering, but very high on hop flavor and aroma. Hop varieties Citra, Ekuanot, and Sabro give hints of orange, apricot, passion fruit, and coconut. The malt recipe uses Golden Promise, Vienna, and wheat to lend a sweet and round character to the base flavor of the beer. All of this is tied together with an addition of coconut milk powder to further enhance the sweet characteristics of the hop flavors and aromas while still ensuring this is very much an IPA. We are excited to share this first release of a new series of beer and to see what your reaction is to our exploration of what it means to be an IPA!

Can from the brewery. Sweet fruit nose, coconut, pineapple, citrus, grapefruit, mango, papaya. Wow. Also wheaty biscuit notes. Hazy brilliant gold with a lacy head. Coconut jumps out in the mouth, with grapefruit and lemon, a bit of pineapple, but really lots of coconut. Finish is slightly bitter and herbal. This is fun. I feel that maybe the coconut has taken over a bit more than I want, over-riding the hops a bit. But it is a sweet IPA without being some dumb lactose bomb, and doesn't really go into milkshake territory. Interesting and I am looking forward to the other 5--and hoping that at some point I will be able to taste them all side-by-side (a futile dream?).

Slight sugary coconut aspect. Sabro? Taste is alright, but not blown way by it, Get the sweetness in the name though. But maybe growing on me…

KBC KAN IPA 6% Wow, the aroma on this is hugely juicy and tropical. The fairly full bodied beer gives big coconut and mild pineapple flavor. The only negative is in the aftertaste I sometimes get brief crayon/plasticine notes but after that I go some bubblegum. Wild and great stuff, closest to full on hazy IPA that I can recall from my local. I should buy more...
