Golden Pride is a premium, superior-strength bottled ale.

Brewed to 8.5% ABV, it is equivalent in strength to Belgian Abbey beer or barley wine, and is designed to be consumed in smaller measures than the traditional pint.

Golden Pride is known for its rich malty flavours, good balance, and notes of orange oil, toasted grain and spicy fruitcake. The late Michael Jackson, beer writer and connoisseur, labelled it 'the Cognac of beers'.

Clear copper color, steady small off-white head. Fruity, sweetish aroma. Medium-bodied. Nutty, fruity, a bit sweetish caramel - fruit candy, alcohol. Light hoppyness. Very similar to some Vintage Ales, but not so complex.

Smells like honey with a good bitter end to it. Body is great, its a tender beer for this high alcohol level. On tap at beer bistro.

(Cask at Kittys, 20120215) The beer poured deep amber and clear. Its head was small and forthy. Aroma had malts, caramell and molasses. Palate was medium bodied and warming with low carbonation. Flavours were molasses, caramell, sweetness, hops, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was a bit harsh, quite sweet and a bit bitter. Quite harsh taste and altogether a bit disappointing.

From a 500ml bottle on 15/2/2012. Pours a relatively clear amber with a small head. Has a strong sweet caramel and toffee malt aroma. The flavour follows suit with masses of caramel and toffee, along with brown sugar and poached fruits. This is a real sweet malt bomb, which is tempered by a good dose of hop bitterness at the end. Certainly has some barley wine like character to it. A very enjoyable brew.

500ml bottle from the LCBO, served ~15C in a Duvel tulip. Aroma: Sweet, grainy malt, candied orange, dusty grass. Appearance: bright copper, clear with an inch of creamy head that lingered and left lacing. Moderate mouthfeel, a little oily. Initially sweet malts, orange, grains, a bit of hop bitterness and some alcohol. Mix of moderate sweetness and bitterness with additional drying from alcohol. Doesn’t really hide its strength much. Nicely balanced beer, not as unctuous as an old ale/barleywine style. Could be a little bigger in flavour but would make a nice strong ale for an early fall evening.

The LCBO got a bunch of different Fuller’s this Christmas, and this is one of them. Pours a deep amber colour with a big creamy beige head, great retention and foamy lacing all-around. Big nose of bread, caramel, dark fruits with hints of molasses and citrusy hops. Seems like a warming mouthfeel at first, but really just goes through in a wet fashion. No burning, wondering were the alcohol’s at ?? The taste is a bit bitter with lots of grain, reminding me or rye, with notes of raisins, orange zest, plums, brown sugar and the grain coming back, lingering in the aftertaste. Not bad at all and too easy to drink. Really, where is the 8.5% ABV ?
