An Imperial American Stout, this extremely limited edition beer is packed with flavours of burnt toast, dark chocolate and hints of toffee with an impeccably smooth finish. The name Papa Steve will not be seen on the front of the bottle, but will be known as being so because of the Red Cap. Roasted malty bitter cocoa and slight sweet. Slight Belgian yeasty. Maybe the last place ever serving the last vintage of this.

Sample thanks to Grumbo: Poured pitch black with brown edges, not a lot of head bubbles. Aroma is dark fruit, candy, chocolate, light smoke, roasted malts. Taste has a card smoke, roasted malts, coffee, interesting bitter chocolate and fruit mix.

17/01/2020. Cask at the 11th Elysian Winter Beer Festival. In the programme as the original and only recipe Steve was on-hand to confirm this has gone back to its origins. Pours opaque black with a small beige head. Aroma of toffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, biscuit, dried fruits, touch of nut and molasses. Medium sweetness and moderate to medium roasted bitterness. Full bodied, slick texture, soft to flat carbonation. Toasted, dark chocolate, moderately bitter, warming finish. Yep, this is good.

New version on tap at the Stoneworks Peterborough. Jet black colour with a thick tan head, that remained to the bottom of the glass. Rich chocolate malty and coffee aroma. Taste coffee roasted bitter, to bittersweet balance. Thick full body, that feels well below 9%.

Gravity cask at Cambridge Beer Festival 2017. Dark brown, bordering on black. Bubbles of tan head. Coffee, coffee, charcoal and coffee in the aroma. Sweet tastwith fudge, cortadito, some yeast extract. Finish is notably more bitter and the body is slick and oily. It’s a good cask imperial stout.
