Another fine addition to the Black Sheep flock of premium bottle ales. This ale was specially commissioned to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Monty Python in 1999.

Ten years later on the 40th anniversary Holy Grail is still going strong. With more hops than a killer rabbit, it's a full-flavoured golden ale with a distinctively fruity flavour followed by the Black Sheep signature dry finish.

We brew Holy Grail with Maris Otter malt, an old and expensive variety that is renowned for the taste and the quality of the beer it produces.

A mixture of old English Hop varieties including a touch of WGV hops gives Holy Grail its lovely fruity nose.

We use a touch of wheat which helps deliver the lovely creamy head and lacing down the glass - just what you would expect from a proper Yorkshire beer!

500 ml. bottle sampled courtesy of Kraddel. BBF 09/2001. Hazy to murky reddish amber brown with white bubbles. Nose is pure cardboard red wine oxidation, sweet madeira & touch watery / thinned out by age. Taste is watery cellar oxidation, tad bitter paper, plastic, red wine oxidation, sweet madeira, light wine sour, totally thinned out by age. Watery & oxidized body. Totally 100 % oxidized for whatever it is worth. Not much else to report here.

It was a dark golden color, with not much of a head. Mostly a sweet, fruity malt smell. It was just like the smell, malty and fruity, with a bit of metallic taste in the background. It has good carbonation, with a decent body. Very good but I have expected more from this.

Pours a clear golden color, topped with a hefty white head. There is a pleasant malty aroma, decently strong. The taste is malty and slightly grainy. Very nice bitterness in the finish. Crisp and refreshing. Extra drinkable.

Doesn’t quite taste like someone pissed in my wine or farted in my general direction, but has a light dose of English scum. Pours brown, with ok head and lacing. Light citrus and light sour finish. Not much evident hops.

On cask at the Haymarket. Appearance - golden with a proportionate head. Nose - gentle floral notes with pale malt. Taste - completely different. Toffee and more toffee. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy and sweet texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - didn’t start off well but decent bitter.

Cask at The Haymarket Bar. Pours clear golden amber, thin white head. Aromas of floral hops and light caramel, near butterscotch. Taste is sweet. Nutty maybe. Slight astringency. Not great.
