Calvados Barrel Aged Mango, Coconut and Tonka Bean Stout

The third beer in our Candy series where we mix fruits and spices into imperial stouts. This time you again get a double coconut whopper with mango and lush tonka bean on top of black liquid heaven. With the added bonus of Calvados barrel aging. Bonkers!

Sometimes mistakes happen. Sometimes these mistakes can turn into happy accidents. The base for this beer could be seen as such a happy accident. We did not mean to make an imperial stout with mango, coconut and tonka bean. But, one day while playing around with samples of fruits and spices we just tried it. It just kinda happened. And, we liked it! Sometimes you really must work with chance as a factor. After a few tweaks here and a few adjustments there we were home and Candy2 was born. Well, it wasn’t called Candy2 at first but remembering our Finback collaboration Candy, which was also a fruits and spices imperial stout, it felt natural to continue that series. So, where do you take it from there? Well, you find the most outrageous barrels you can and let the beer age in those. Turns out Calvados barrels are those barrels. So, Calvados it was, and is. Candy3!

Bottle at home, courtesy of the Hops crew. Pours jet black with a tan head that dissipates quickly. Nose is a nice, quite tropical mix of mango, coconut, some almond from the tonka, chocolate and calvados. Fruity, decadent, deep. Taste is sweet, showing underlying mango (more of this as it warms), some coconut, loads of chocolate and cacao, and boozy touch, mainly in the finish, that I guess is coming from the barrel. Although it's quite sweet, the finish is surprisingly dry (well, compared), the body is rich and silky, with a soft carbonation. It's pretty decent, maybe not outstanding, but I gotta give props (and some extra point) for the extraordinary flavour profile. It was fun and interesting, and even though it had all the potential of going sideways I must admit it was quite pleasant to drink.

Bottled. A black beer with a tan head. The aroma has notes of coconut, exotic fruits, nuts, brandy, wood, roasted malt, and dark chocolate. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, caramel, brandy, coconut, wood, dark chocolate, and exotic fruit, leading to a dry finish.

aroma of mango, honey, roasted malts, vanilla.coca.. Flavor is roasted malts, wood, booze, faint fruity note from mango but not at all as prominent as candy2. I think the barrel aging has worked very well, resulting in a more smooth and well blended flavor. Prefer this one to candy2. candy3 is like, the finished product, 2 was only halfway there.

10th October 2022 Opaque dark brown beer, small tan head. Tinned mango nose, a little Pakistani honey mango in there. Palate is smooth and has reasonable fine carbonation. Smooth chocolate and tonka, richer dark chocolate coming through that gets mildly bitter. A nice touch of coconut, not overdone. Unfortunately the mango really doesn't easily with the chocolate for me, too disparate to meld and then there is the spicy Calvados on the back end. Tasty for sure but a little disharmonious overall.

Habja nincs, vöröses fekete szín. Szinte minden mást elnyomó, intenzív kókuszos, mangós illat, tonkababos, kakaós-csokis beütéssel, határozott hordós, vaníliás bukéval. Erőteljes kókuszos íz, kakaós, csokis, kávés, vaníliás aromákkal, mangós, aszalt gyümölcsös, hordós, tonka babos komponensekkel. Édes, nehéz, alig szénsavas, enyhén de határozottan kesernyés. Nagyon finom desszertsör. Kicsit talán túltolták a fűszerezést, minden ízkomponens harsány benne.
