Local home-brewer, Tony (Rainy Day Brewing), has long impressed us here with his beer. One such brew, a delicious Rauchbier, really stood out. It was decided to invite him to the brewery to create a barrel aged, funky version. Bamberg Beech Smoked Malt, locally grown Pale Malt and a basket full of speciality malts were used in our interpretation of this classic style. In an additional twist we used large quantities of Fuggles Hops to add an earthy bitterness and also to protect the beer from some of the lactic acid producing bacteria in our mixed culture. Appropriately brewed on November 5th, the beer then spent over 4 months in oak to slowly develop. The result is an intensely smoky but well balanced beer with hints of oak and fruity funky esters from the wild yeast.

Bottle purchased online from Hoptimism. Pours dark brown with huge tan coloured head. Nose of funk, wood, bread, a little smoke. The taste is dominated by bretty funk. Some wood, dark berries & very subtle smoke. Quite complex as with most LEP beers. Medium body, daft amounts of carbonation (sublime to ridiculous!!). Lacks balance. The brett dominates the smoke too much for me to love it.
