Brewing an American IPA, but with a Belgian twist...that's the idea behind Amer-Amer. We chose two American varieties of hops, but only use whole hop flowers cultivated in Belgium. Taste: The 'Belgo-American' hops have a better balance in flavour and a less aggressive bitterness, without losing taste or intensity. Dry hopping with Cascade enforces the beer's rich aroma.

Clear orange beer, small creamy white head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: banana, bit malty, banana peel, bit fruity, grains, hay. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty bitter, metallic, banana peel, grains, hay, citrus. Aftertaste: pretty bitter, bit cheesy, some grapefruit, bitter, orange peel, resinous, very very bitter, bit unpleasant.

Very huge, dense & fine, just yellowish head, quite stable over amberish ochre beer. Bit cookies dough, and bittering continental hops. Aromatic herbs and hnt at toasted other grains. Outspoken bitter, yet aromatic with a retronasal flavour, again akin to cookies dough with faraway hints at cinnamon, coumarine... Gradually the bitterness becomes a tad metallic. Medium bodied, medium slick. Longlasting bitterness. I keep thinking that New World hops are the real thing for I/IPA's , better than continental ones. Still, here this cookies flavour gives a nice touch.

Ranke’s latest, a ‘Belgo-American IPA’ so basically intended as an U.S. style IPA hopped with Cascade and Centennial, the twist being that both these classic American hop varieties were in this case grown in Belgium; the name (translating as bitter - bitter) is doubtlessly a play on XX Bitter, De Ranke's biggest hit. Draught glass at Foeders in Amsterdam, my 4000th Belgian beer apparently... Snow white, mousy, quite dense and stable, closed, membrane-lacing head, misty apricot blonde robe. Aroma of bitter garden weeds, yellow grapefruit peel, straw, green banana, dry bread crust, chewing gum, withering cut flowers, glue, green Chinese chrysanthemum tea, unripe banana, freshly cut grass, soap. Fruity, estery onset, pear, apricot and apple peel notes, bubblegummy and banana peel effects too, medium fizz, light sourish undertone; pleasantly bready middle, tad glueish and in that sense ‘smoother’ than a typical Belgian ale – especially by De Ranke – would be, but a bit annoyingly soapy as well; phenolic clove-like touches here and there, but indeed the hops prevail, in a rooty, citrus peel-like, grassy, peppery way, yet not offering the same amount of aromatic citric freshness I am used to from a classically designed American style IPA. Very enjoyable, highly drinkable Belgian blonde more than IPA, bit too soapy and not aromatically hoppy enough for its own intentions, but a solid brew nonetheless.

Tap at Foeders. Hazy golden with big and fluffy white head. Lots of fresh 'green' hops, grassy, soft sweet malts with a light bready touch (very fresh bread), soft caramel, hay. Quite bitter, light sweet. Medium bodied. If bright green would be a taste I guess this would be it, and I don't mean that in a bad way at all. Another lovely beer from this great brewery.
