Alvinne's Fellowship of Exceptional Ales n°8. Scandinavian sour Steinbeer brewed for and with fellows.
1 Yule was the last day in the Shire Calendar, marking the end of the year. On a modern calendar, it would correspond to December 21. 1 Yule was always a Highday (Friday). So we brewed the last beer of the Fellowship on Friday December 21, 2018. It was an experimental brew mashing into an oak barrel, using a Christmas tree during lautering, making a bonfire to heat the stones to bring the wort to boil, cooled during the longest night and inoculated with Lithuanian Simonaitis farmhouse yeast, fermented in an oak barrel.

Bottle. Color: Slightly hazy golden, white head. Aroma: Sourish, conifer, funky. Taste: Moderate to over moderate sour, tart, fruity notes of stone fruit and notes of conifer. Medium body, just below average carbonation. Rather strange combination of fruit and conifer with some barnyard funk and wood tannins, but in one way or another it works for me. Moderate sweet and light bitterness. Dry-ish mouthfeel. Quite nice.

Pours unclear blonde. Medium big white head. Smell is sharp, tart, mild juniperberries. Typical alvinne yeast profile. Mildly acetic. Taste is full, mild smoke, fleshy, malty, juniper berries. Not bad, but not my cup of tea.

Exploding cap, bloody dangerous! Beer is lightly sour and reasonably funky. Juniper there, a bit fruity cause of the sloe? Not much christmas tree, maybe next time use two. Good fun and damn tasty! Good first of the friends with benefits set.
