Luponic Distortion is not a single beer, but rather an ongoing series of beers that will evolve and revolve approximately every 90 days. It all kicks off with Revolution No. 001, to be followed by Revolution No. 002 and so on.

The base beer will remain the same with each new release, but the hop blend will change every time, so that no two releases will be exactly alike. In other words, there will be a common thread, but also some turns in the road as different hops are pushed to the forefront.

Luponic Distortion is an intentional departure from the heavier style of many IPAs. Instead, it aims for a razor-like brightness, providing a clean platform for the hop aromas to pop as vividly as possible.
As many as nine different hops will be included in each release, with up to six used in the dry hopping alone. However, with each release, the brewing team is going to turn up the volume a different featured experimental hop, which will be dry hopped in greater quantity than the others.
“We can completely evolve, change and redirect this thing as new hops come to us and as we get to know the hops better,” says Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “Luponic is this beer that can keep morphing and stay interesting and remain out in front of this crazy hop wave.”

12 ounce can. Medium gold color. Large rocky white head. Big resiny hop nose with hints of pine and mint. Soft malty palate upfront. Splendid pine hops soon follow, complex and spicy. Finish has minty, piney notes with a hint of peppery goodness. This is a wonderful IPA that is smooth and drinkable while offering a big hoppy jolt. Highly recommended.

12 oz can. Pours a clear dark gold with full head. Clean aromas of peaches, pineapple, spicy pine and toasted malts. Flavors of toasted malt. spicy fresh hops leaning towards stoned fruit and pine, muted orange, and a little sharp grain. Tasty and easy to drink. Excellent for the price!

Poured from a 12oz can dated May 11, 2016. Aroma is hop forward with a light grain presence. Light cracker malt notes. Hop aromas are moderate with nice citrus, pineapple, mango, melon and stone fruit. Pours a clear, bright yellow-gold with a medium large, thick, white head that recedes very slowly. Medium high lacing and no legs. Flavor has a light sweetness with a medium light grain note with some cracker. Medium bitterness. Moderate hop notes with tropical fruit and bright citrus. Lots of melon, mango, orange and tangerine. A light resinous note as well. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent easy drinking IPA with moderate hop and grain notes. This is definitely sessionable and balanced. Would perhaps prefer brighter hop aromas and flavors, but the bitterness is perfect. Mouthfeel might be a touch light as well.

35cl bottle, exactly 1 month old. Clear pale orange pour with a thin white head. Smells like lemon zest, green hops, honey, unripe mango. The taste follows the same notes, with a green hop bitterness overlapping a mild malt sweetness. Dry finish, medium to light body with a bitter aftertaste.

This was poured into a becher pint glass.
The appearance was a crisp transparent burnt yellow color with carbonation rising at a moderate pace to fill a slim finger’s worth of white foamy to bubbly head. Moderate sticky foamy lace.
The smell starts off with some crisp grassy to bitter piney rimmed hops. Subtle underscore of citrus with a dry sweet malt in the backbone.
The taste is bittersweet with a semi-sticky grassy/piney/citrus aftertaste. Quick wet finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium bodied. Bitterness seems to stick to my tongue. Carbonation feels good.
Overall, I’d say this was a pretty good AIPA from Firestone Walker. I’d be happy to have again.

Wow, this is a different beer, fresh and on tap. Same as below, but much fresher and brighter all together.
12oz can picked up at Total Wine in Reno
Pours clear light golden with a medium sized white head, some lacing. Aroma is fruity, grassy and hay. Flavor is grassy, grapefruit, grains and straw
A little disappointed, I was expecting more from what I’ve heard about this beer. Still good though

Bottle. Pours a clear yellow gold with a white head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a good amount of grass with some earthy citrus and some light sweet grains underlying. Flavor has lots of earthy citrus with some grass and a bit of light sweet grains backing.

Can from Deguchiya. Huge tropical nose that never seems to end with pineapple, passion fruit and mango standing out with citrus as well. Clean and crisp on the palate. Light bodied with average carbonation. More tropical fruit and citrus on the palate, but the malt is there to offer counterbalance to the hops. So drinkable. Will definitely buy again in the can. Almost like a lighter version of Sono Ju by Shiga Kogen. --- Beer merged from original tick of Firestone Luponic Distortion: Revolution No. 001 on 20 May 2016 at 21:04 - Score: 8.
