Strong coffee stout by this craft brewery in Manchester, northern England; at Billie’s Bier Kafétaria. Creamy, pale brownish-beige, rather thin but stable, membrane-lacing head over a jet black robe. Aroma of caramel liqueur, hot chocolate sauce, crumbled ‘speculoos’, coffee cream, cinnamon, vanilla, toasted pecan nuts, toasted bread, espresso, hints of cola, bayleaf and ink. Dense and clean onset, sweet with notes of candied dates and pear, moderately carbonated with full, oily mouthfeel; layers of bitter black chocolate, toasted walnut and hard caramel fill the mouth cavity, roasty and bitter but kept in check by toffeeish main sweetness. Coffee bitterness and spiciness are there, but could have been more dominant for me personally, as they are a bit lost in the overall bittersweetness of the malts; whisky-like alcohol warms the end, while bitter black chocolate flavours seem to linger more than the coffee flavours. Utterly solid old school stout with enough roasted bitterness and fortunately no lactose, which in this kind of beer is a plus for me, but I would not have minded a more pronounced coffee profile, as was the case in the two different coffee editions of AleSmith’s Speedway I had at Beerlovers Bar some time before during that same evening.

Canned mid February 2020. A non-pastry WB is an uncommon find. This one turns out to be a very decent oatmeal stout, with a nice amount of roast and some sweetness. Lactose isn't overdone, but I'm getting a lot of berry flavours somehow, weird. Quite yum.

(Keg at Pien Brewpub, 20200926) The beer poured oily and black. Its head was small and lightly brown. Aroma had dark chocolate, marmalade and alcohols. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, sweetness, marmalade, dark chocolate and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, burnt and bitter. Messy but the ABV was well hidden.
