In 2008, we congratulated Mark Graham and Loren Miraglia for winning our Batch No. 1 Homebrew competition by brewing their beer as our very first batch. Recently, we decommissioned our original brewhouse and brought a new, state-of-the-art brewhouse to life. Recreating our first recipe seemed the best way to begin this new chapter in our brewing history. Levud’s is a Belgian-style golden ale that’s crisp, effervescent, complex and filled with memories and significance in our brewery’s history.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep golden color ale with a small bubbly head with average retention and no lacing. Aroma of candi sugar with some dry European hops and floral notes also noticeable. Taste is dominated by sweet malt which borderlines on being gross with not much else in terms of characteristics. Body is somewhat oily with some low carbonation but no alcohol flavor. This is a sweet mess with no carbonation and must admit if also my first disappointment from a usually fine brewery.

Thanks to beerbill for sharing - hazy straw color - nearly still pour - a lot of apple wine character in the aroma, with some odd phenolics and a little bit of a buttery quality - low carbonation, slick mouthfeel - tart, earthy, overripe apple and pear stick in the mouth, followed by a lot of honey sweetness, and a lightly bitter finish - lots of apple core throughout - very sweet, without enough to balance it.

Capped bottle (2009/2157). Bright copper color with not much head. Warm aromas of light seeded fruit and some candi. Medium body with very light carbonation. It’s a bit peppery/spicy with heat, light fruit, maybe some caramel or rye. It is somewhat sweet, and finishes rather mildly. Quite satisfying.

Bottle. #1820 (maybe) Amber beer with no real head. Spicy, yeasty, slight estery aroma. Sweet orange, malt and spice flavor with a nice earthy yeastiness. Medium body. Sweet esters and malt linger with a bit of alcohol wamring. Bit strong. If the alcohol and extra malt was taken away it’s be in between Duvel and Inferno with a more balanced spice/ester combination.

Bottle courtesy of Hopscotch. Pours a hazy golden-orange color with a soft off white head. Aromas of malt and dough. Big sweet malty flavor with some peppery spices, earthiness and doughy Belgian yeast. Slight alcohol presence. Medium body with average carbonation and a syrupy mouthfeel. A decent Belgian strong ale.

Pours cloudy orange with a small head. Orange fruity and hoppy aroma. Mild yeasty too. Goes into the flavour and becomes nicely mixed with caramel flavour. Smooth to mellow. Light spiced and slight dry finish.7-3-7-3-15=3.5

Sent in a photo to be uploaded. Pours with a small white head that covers a hazy orange body. Aroma of coriander, saison spices, hops and orange. Taste is yeasty, a bit meaty, with oranges, honey and spiciness. Alcohol adds a creaminess, and is well hidden. Dangerously drinkable. Slightly syrupy with light carbonation. PLENTY MORE AVAILABLE still.
Very good, but I don’t think this one is aging super beautifully at two years in (unlike the barrel aged version). Tons of very sweet honey biscuit and signs of oxidation after nearly two years. Still a good brew but getting a bit harder to drink...I have traded or consumed all but one of my bottles I think.

750 ml bottle purchased mail order from Joey at South Bay in Imperial Beach, CA. Bottle is numbered 1311/2157, and was signed by the brewers. Pour is hazy orange golden with a one inch white head. Aroma of sharp hoppiness, and Belgian yeastiness. Plenty of rich apricot and floral goodness present as well. Taste is bright and harsh initially, quite a bit of bright Saaz hops, and decent shot of booze. Not as clean as I imagined it would be from the nose. Apricot and some black pepper spiciness feature in the aftertaste. This was nice, but from the nose I imagined it would be super nice. I am realy impressed with this brewery.
