(Cask at GBBF, London, 6 Aug 2008) Brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, nutty nose with notes of chocolate. Malty, nutty taste with dark fruit and a moderate, spicy bitterness. Rather sweet. Drinkable, but leaning in the boring direction.

I’d had this when I was in Scotland several years ago and found it far too bitter for my taste; when I heard me friend Justin was headed up there I warned him against it. So what did he do? He bought me back a bottle and forced me to drink it when I was around his place (cheers Jus!). Still, at least I can now rate it. Pours a deep red/brown with a beige soap-sud head. Smell and initial taste is of rich sweet malt. Develops into sweet, sticky treacle and sour plums - at this point I was quite enjoying it. However, it’s the aftertaste that gets you - a cloying sticky mouthfeel with a far-too-bitter earthiness, that lingers unpleasantly for ages. Better than I remember, but not one I’d come back to again.

Bottle from Tesco, Wokingham. Poured a bright amber, with a thin, tight white head and some lacing. Malty aroma, with sweet brown sugar and damsons. Similar sweet, malt heavy flavours; toffee and brown bread. Very little hop character. Finish was grain, hay and the smallest amount of residual grassy hops.

Cask (Clachaig Inn, Glencoe): Amber coloured, small, but persistent off-white foamy layer; clear, clean sweet-malty and fruity nose with distinctive hoppy-aromatic edges; solid bitter-sweet flavour, light bodied; malty, sweet-bitter finish with hoppy traces. Pleasant stuff..........

Bottled. Dark amberish ruby colour with mediumsized beige head. Malt and caramel in aroma. Flavour is roasted malts with sweet caramel. The roastiness is pretty deep down below. Wellbalanced though.
