McEwan’s 70/- is a beer that’s perfect for drinking with friends. Rich in taste and creamy in texture, it’s an ale that oils the wheels of a night out. Smooth times are ahead.

The shilling categories in our beers’ names have an interesting history. In the nineteenth century the taxman charged a duty in shillings on each hogshead (54 gallons) of beer depending on its strength. The stronger the beer, the more he levied.

Keg at Jolly Judge. It pours clear amber with a thick white head. The nose is soft, grainy, brown caramel, raisin and sultana. The taste is smooth, creamy, toasty grain, wood, touch of pepper and leather with a dry finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Quite superior to the caledonia best I had earlier today... Good looking a good mouth-feel.

tap at Porters in Stirling - Pours dark amber with a one finger, lingering head. The aroma has lots of caramel malt and toffee. The flavor is sweet caramel malt with maybe a touch of spice. It’s medium bodied and decent overall.

From the Keg in Edinburgh. Dark copper color. Strong hoppy aroma. Bitterish flavor, with good malt as well. Refreshing and nice enough.

Cask at The Malt Shovel, Edinburgh. Dark golden coloured, small white head, rather neutral nose. Sweetish malty, slight herbal and fruity with discreet notes of hops. Short bitterish finish. Easy drinkable but weak.
