McEwan’s 70/- is a beer that’s perfect for drinking with friends. Rich in taste and creamy in texture, it’s an ale that oils the wheels of a night out. Smooth times are ahead.

The shilling categories in our beers’ names have an interesting history. In the nineteenth century the taxman charged a duty in shillings on each hogshead (54 gallons) of beer depending on its strength. The stronger the beer, the more he levied.

From tap at Winstons. Pours clear and golden orange with a small, dense creamy and slight off-white head. Breadish and malty aroma, light roasted. Flavour is nicely roasted dry caramel malty towards breadish. Ends with a lingering malty flavour and light bitterness.

Half pint from keg at The Dome in Edinburgh. Deep, dark brown body with a thin, nitro creamy head. Plain malty smell. Smooth and careful hints of caramel malt in flavour. Soft carbonated. Clean tasting. A bit thin palate, but alright as an aperitif [13.11.2008].

Can. Deep brown with a slight, off-white head. I drank a lot of this as a student because it was cheap rather than good. Totally inoffensive with a vaguely malty aroma and flavour, and an industrial metallic finish.

Draught. Darkish copper brown, small creamy off-white head. Sweet malty, a bit roasted aroma. A bit watery mouthfeel. Coffeish, roasted malty, whisky fudge -notes. Grassy hops in the aftertaste.

On tap at l’Autre Oeil, summer 2005. Reddish brown ale with an off-white head. Light caramel aroma, too cold. Good malt biscuit in taste with light nuts and light bitterness. Rather thin and boring. Nuttyness comes out well as beer warms.

Clear orange color, short creamy lasting head. More caramel and toffee than 80 Shilling, note of hazelnut. Not really bitter, lingering palate. Quite nice.
