One of the ‘groundbreaking collaborations’ (their own words) Stone Berlin – no longer in existence – has done, in this case with Mahr’s Bräu in Bamberg and legendary Avery in the U.S.; from an impressive magnum bottle shared by Filip Van Damme at Nieuwjaarsreceptie Gentse Biervereniging, cheers! Medium thick, mousy, pale greyish off-white head lacing in shreds over a clear, copper-hued burgundy red-brown beer. Aroma of cooked sausages, fried horse steak, dusty old wood, hard caramel, walnut purée, dried figs, marzipan, wet toast, mushrooms pan-fried with brown sugar, brandy. Sweet onset with impressions of dried fig and date as well as some apple peel and blue plum; medium carb, full oily and bit vinous mouthfeel. Caramelly malt core with a soft brown-bready edge as well as an upcoming smoky note, reminiscent of smoked sausages and even (vaguely) bonfire, plunging into a long, warming, complex finish coloured by a late peppery hop bitter touch, lingering malt sweetness and smokiness as well as brandy-like alcohol. Nice, full, complex ‘Rauchbock’ – Aecht Schlenkerla’s example amplified with American craft brewing boldness. Different and alluring, one of the most interesting and satisfying beers of the whole evening for me.

Clear deep amber to red brown beer, dense creamy bit irregular beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: very malty, caramel, grains, hay, cow fodder, hint of vanilla, bourbon, milk chocolate, slightly smoky. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: nice and smoky start, malty, caramel, some grains, bit of chocolate, soft roast, little sourish. Aftertaste: malty, grains, soft acidity, nice smoky notes, bitter and hoppy notes, some caramel, some dried fruits, bit sweet.

(1.5L bottle shared @ Nische's tasting, tack Ola!) Pours clear dark brown to black with a fairly big cream head. Notes of moderate smoke with a hint of charcuterie, caramel malt and brown bread, nutty toasty roasted grains, light maple, vanilla, a little bourbon, leathery oak, slightly peppery herbal hops, tobacco. Lightly sweet up front, drying out a bit on the finish with the wood and ample smoke, umami vibes in the aftertaste. Above medium bodied with fairly soft filling carb. Not my usual style but this was pretty well-executed with a number of twists on the traditional. Solid, even if one doesn't need to put it in a mag...

Nice chestnut color. Lovely barley wine perfume with fatty bock notes. Medium full, chewy juicy malt, vanilla, elegant smoke, good Hops to cut.
