'Versnijbier', a blend of Hofbrouwerijke's Hofelf and Bosprotter (two strong blondes, the first with wheat) made for the 160th birthday of a fanfare in Berlaar, indeed locally named 'Balder'. Irregularly shaped, medium thick, membrane-lacing, eggshell-white, breaking but generally well-retaining head over a misty, deep golden beer with apricot hue and fine strings of minute-bubbled sparkling here and there, turning a cloudy peach with sediment. Aroma of banana-flavoured bubblegum and very strongly so, white bread, ripe apricot, rainwater, freshly cut grass, white soap, plaster or wet papier maché, plastic even, coriander seed of course, touch pear, DMS (overcooked cauliflower) note in the background initially - but becoming increasingly strong as the beer warms up. Fruity onset, sweet with very pronounced banana ester as announced by the nose, pear and pineapple hints, lively carbonation with strong minerally effect (carbonated sparkling water), supple and rather glueish, soapy mouthfeel; pale malt sweetish middle with a clear metallic 'zing' to it, bready edges, lots of coriander seed spiciness on top but phenolic effects (clove, rosemary) as well. The 'rainwatery' minerality shows up again in the coriander-soapy, smooth finish, where a grassy hop bitterish touch appears - unable to save the day. Fruitiness lingering along with the coriander and a dash of warming, 'jenever'-ish alcohol, which should remain completely unnoticeable at this ABV; the DMS very annoyingly makes a rerun retronasally, putting me off this beer altogether. I recall not liking either Bosprotter nor Hofelf too much many years ago (from bottles bought at Willems in Grobbendonk if I remember correctly) and this is the sum of two bland, not very successful beers: a third bland, unsuccessful beer. Somewhat flawed, boring and unworthy of a 160th birthday of whatever organisation, if you ask me. Better skip this one.
