Primal Cut, which started as a smoked porter with coffee and blackcurrant, has been ageing in bourbon barrels and we're thrilled with how the beer has developed. This complex porter’s blackcurrant notes shine through beautifully with deep coffee and chocolate flavours, complemented by a wisp of smoke in the air and distinctive bourbon character.

Thin, slightly roasty and earthy with some berries, hints of oaky sweetness and syrup. A bit unbalanced

From tap at Taplokaal Gist, Utrecht, during the Siren tap takeover. Aroma is roasted malt with red & dark fruits, caramel, coffee, light smoke, and chocolate. Flavour is a bit tart and mild sweet with a soft bitterness. Body is above medium. Very pleasant, rather modest barrel notes.

375ml bottle. Quasi black colour with late awakening, very small, frothy to creamy, diminishing, minimally lacing, beige head. BA supported, roasty, slightly chocolately, dark malty aroma, notes of toffee, coffee, fudge, hints of caramel, Bourbon. Taste is BA supported, roasty dark malty, minimally woody, tannic and yeasty fruity, minimally yeasty spicy, hints of cocoa, blackcurrant, a touch of oak and blue grapes, morello, marmite allusions, alcoholic interludes. Minimally creamy, watery texture, minimally dry and astringent palate, fine, soft to flat carbonation. Didn't age that well, a bit undercomplex concerning style and abv - not fully convincing if not even disappointing.

A: rich malty, chocolate, cocoa, dark fruits, apples touch, bourbon, black berries, woody, toffee touch. T: full malty base, chocolate, dark dried fruits, bourbon, black berries, woody, apples, bit caramel, soft carbonation, not so complex but not bad after more than 4 years in bottle, enjoyed for sure.

Rocky tan froth left a creamy cover on a still black body. Huge aroma of bourbon, blackberry & booze. Full bodied, smooth creamy & sticky. This is all over the place, blueberry, malt, bourbon & tangy citrus tastes with a long boozed up lightly hopped tangy finish. Takes the taste buds to the limit.

Black with a thin, creamy, beige head. Blackberries, bourbon and fudge greet the nose, the first of which must be the black currant. A nice mix and done well. Taste is bittersweet up front, tart at the finish with the black currant taking over. Lingering black currant and smoke. Body to the full side of medium, mild carbonation. The alcohol remains well hidden. Overall, very well balanced. Good stuff.

Bottle from The Gull, North Vancouver
Black colour. Strong aroma of spirit, alcohol, some sour fruit. Sweet, full bodied, with strong sour berry jam and spirit; I didn't know it had blackcurrant when I picked it, or I would have given it a second thought. Well made for what it is.

Big boozy mess on the nose, but on the palate it is sweet, deep dark fruit with a tough of coffee.

Jet black with a small beige head. Intense bourbon on the nose and roast. Soy Sauce and bourbon with some heat and just a touch of higher alcohols. A bit disjointed and harsh.
