A full bodied victorian style porter with hints of liquorice. The initial bitterness gives way to a smooth, mellow finish. A bronze medal winner in the Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2008.

Cask at Picture House, Stafford – but have drunk it many times elsewhere before. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with minimal cream head but good lacing. The aroma speaks of burnt toast and molasses to me. In the mouth it’s briefly creamy before sweet fruits and liquorice come through to swamp it. Later still there are hints of chocolate. Finish is slightly bitter. It’s nice enough, but seems to lack any defining “portery” characteristic.

Bottle from Morrisons. Pours black with a medium sized thick creamy beige head. Aromas of milk chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Taste is more chocolate, coffee and roasty notes. The initial taste is a touch of sweetness but that develops into a roasty slightly bitter finish. Medium body with a very smooth mouthfeel. Very nice Porter.
