Imperial stout by this pioneer of the new global style craft brewing in protectionist Germany – and one of those breweries I never get tired of. Moussy, small-bubbled, yellowish beige, slowly opening head on a black beer with very thin burgundy edge. Aroma of black coffee, pure unsugared black chocolate, charcoal and even some bonfire yet without true Rauchbier effect, salmiak, wet leather, gin, burnt toast, pipe tobacco ashes, black peppercorns. Dense onset, some very subtle sweetish dried blackberry and prune but otherwise dry, with a light black olive-like umami accent, finely tingling carbonation and full, oily mouthfeel; roasted pecan-nutty, bitter black-chocolatey and toasty, eventually even slightly ashy ‘black maltiness’ and roastedness, lots of coffee-like bitterness filling the back of the mouth, amplified by a strong leafy hop bitterness and an afterglow of gin-like alcohol which nevertheless retains its ideal position faraway in the finish. Lots of sticky, coffee-like roasted bitterness remains. It seems as if the ‘Russian’ in imperial stout nowadays only refers to these old-fashioned roasty bitter examples rather than imperial stout in general, but this is a pointless semantic discussion of course – let’s just say that I like my imperial stouts this way, having grown a bit tired of all those over-the-top, often sickly sweet pastry stouts… This indeed is imperial stout the way it was done in previous centuries and I absolutely love it. As said, Ganställer never disappoints. Zum wohl!

Big thank you to kappldav123 for this 0,44 l can. Pours out oily and pitch black, Small one finger dark beige head. Looks great! Intensive choco and coffee smell. Taste starts with creamy dark chocolade, coffee and hints of berryfruits. Smooth thick texture with hidden alcohol but also warming. Little bit sticky. Increasing dry choco bitterness. Really strong stuff.

Many thanks to kappldav123 for sharing! Smooth mild beginning. Intense deep roasted tar, coffee, burned grain. Viscous, deep caramelly dry with a punch of espresso in the back. Deep, intense on the tongue. Tar, espresso, burned grain. And very mild! Fascinating!
