This release in our Six Tastes IPA series explores the spicy flavor sensation, which we set out to do by creating a gap in the visual, aromatic, and flavor perception of this beer by juxtaposing it against tropical hop character and malt sweetness. To accomplish this we used two ingredients known for their spicy nature: red chili peppers and Sichuan pepper. The balance of Sichuan pepper was arranged to pick up on its ever so slight citrus-like character without providing too much of the tongue-numbing sensation that it is famous for. Red chilis provide an overall impression of spiciness that contrasts the tropical contribution from the hops, which were selected for their fruity nature (Citra, Ekuanot, Sabro, and Talus). The final product is anything but one dimensional and a perfect complement to a wide variety of foods on izakaya menus.

Aroma is basically IPA like but the taste has a really spicy bite. Nice though! Spice has a good taste to it rather than just being heat. Is it jalapeño or something like that?

Can from Isetan. Slightly reddish golden orange color, looks like chili. Nose is huge chili pepper, something like a habanero, with lemon, tropical fruit, bit of honey malt, touch of coconut. The aromas of the hops blend pretty well with the chilis. Not sure if I get any sansho, but it would be similar to the citrus and peppery notes. This is actaully quite hot, burning the back of my throat and down into my stomach (I hope it goes no further). Nice tropical fruit and citrus and honey go with it. I think it's a decently done beer. Still, the chili is overwhelming and the drinkability very low.
