McEwan’s IPA can trace its heritage back to the 1860s ale that was made for the 18,000 mile journey to India. After being unpacked it was dispatched inland to provide relief for workers toiling beneath the unforgiving sub-continental sun. It tasted so good it’s a wonder each barrel reached its destination.

Clear amber with a white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and fruity. Flavor is moderate sweet and light bitter. A bit light bodied. More sweet than bitter. 241004

I thought this beer was a little flat and tasteless. Pour is amber. Nose and taste is just not really there. Some citrus and spruce. Light caramels. Rated 11/22/02

1986-04-12, Can, one of the first ones i tasted the first time I was over to Scotland. Nice then not so nice noe (flavor).

12oz bottle-pours a head of white bubbles and copper/brown color. Aroma is medium malt-some caramel/brown sugar. Taste is dark/medium malt-some caramel/brown sugar, secondary/faint hops bite. An easy drinking beer but not much hops, so I enjoyed it but not an IPA.

Deep amber with off-white head. Malty aroma laced with toffee, caramel, bread. The flavor is mostly sweet with a slight sourness/bitterness in the finish. Thin body and watery texture. Very little carbonation. Bland, quite forgettable.

Bottle at Brews in the Village; nose ewas graing with little hops, brown with a small beige head, flavor grainy with some caramel and a tiny bitter hop finish.

Dark brown almost black with creamy light brown head. Sour wheaty like smell. Sweet caramel flavor ending with a rich malt.

Amber color with thin white head. Darkest IPA I’ve ever seen. Sweet malt aroma with a hint of noble hops in the background. This beer seems similar to the McEwan’s Scotch Ale, maybe the same type of malt and yeast used. A little thinner than the Scotch Ale. Nice beer, a bit out of the IPA style. I’d prefer much more hop presence in the aroma and flavor. I’m left with a malt-grain slight hoppy aftertaste that is really nice. I enjoyed it.

Big creamy very light gray head with larger bubbles, shrinking rapidly. Dark red body. Deep, sweet aroma of smoky, toffeeish malts, and some green apple. Where are the hops? Deep, smoky, sweet malty taste with smoky, bitter aftertaste, which lingers. Smokiness really dominates. Smooth mouthfeel. Quite good, but perhaps a bit too much smoke for my tastes, and not enough else.

Bottled. Dark copper coloured, small foamy white head. Fruity aroma with some hoppy hints. Flavour quite sweet hoppy bitterish. Not much IPA in this one, rather a very sweet bitter... Long hoppy aftertaste with some caramellish and hayish hints. Toffee in aftertaste too.
