On the day I am drinking this beer in history, in 1796 the Battle of Borghetto took place between Napolean's French forces and the Austrians - when soldiers still used muskets and ram rods to push the ammunition to the end of the gun barrel. Not much pushing required to get this strong ale down the end of my drinking barrel, it slipped down the palate really well for its strength - having tasty very mildly sweet malts certainly helped proceedings. Mildly floral aroma.

[275ml bottle from Home Bargains.] Not seen this for a while! But it seems to taste of Young’s of old. A golden amber pour with a thin cream head; aroma of barley; classic English hop bitterness with a sweet malty body ; and some caramel and honey to finish. Nostalgic.

275ml Bottle from Home & Bargains – cheap ! Caramel dominates the nose, but also a hint of smokiness. Pours a mid-amber orange-brown with a small transient off-white head. More malts and hops when in the mouth plus a little spiciness. A sweet finish like barley-sugar. Reasonable, but I was expecting something more distinctive.

19/4/2018. Bottle at the Calthorpe Arms, London. Pours pale amber with a lasting just off-white head. Aroma of caramel, barley, hop, fruit and grass. Medium plus sweetness, light bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, bit above average carbonation. Not bad.

From old tasting notes. Bright orange gold color with a medium frothy beige head. Slightly tart fruity malt nose. Semi dry malty flavor upfront. Briny notes in middle. Light malty finish with bitter hops is quite satisfying and long on the palate. Well balanced and flavorful.
