Thanks to Beer Savant for sharing 2012 vintage bottle during his 50th birthday bash. Brownish-black pour with a medium foamy tan head that recedes steadily. Short strings of lace. Aroma of roast coffee, malt and whiskey. Full-bodied with a subtle bourbon character and flavors of roasted malt, burnt marshmallow and coffee. The finish is oaky with a chocolate and coffee aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark brown black with a slight dark tan head that left quickly. Aroma has a lot of chocolate and a fair amount of heat/whisky. Maybe a little dark fruit. Full bodied, or nearly. Flavor is chocolate, which quickly turns to heat, which turns out to be whisky. Then it gets a bit coffee with dark biscuit. Myabe a touch of toffee. Heat/whiskey is ever present, but it’s not all that disturbing. More of a taste enhancer. Fairly subtle offering.

22oz waxed bomber pours with a dark mahogany body supporting a mocha head of foam. The aroma offers up booze, roasted malts, chocolate brownie, kind of rye like whiskey notes and then more booze at the end of the draw. The taste hits all at once with dark roasted malts, chocolate, sweet whiskey, a mild tart like rye whiskey note and then earthy booziness. Another sip brings up some mild barrel wood char too. Pretty darn nice.

Bottle thanks to Dave. Pours a pure black color with a medium beige head. A great smoky light sour mash nose. Sweet big wheat, bourbon, chocolates, light bitterness, some vanilla. Very good.

Has a nice light whiskey barrel flavour. Quite thick and syrupy with pretty low carbonation. Slight lacing. Black roast malt with some booze. Good but not quite worth the price. Bottle thanks to Sammy and Liam.

2012 vintage shared with some friends. Pours a solid black with a decent sized tan head that slowly dissipates. The aroma is roasty, chocolate, caramel, spices and coffee wrapped in a subtle but evident barrel treatment of vanilla, lots of ethanol and sweet bourbon whiskey. The flavor starts off sweet and malty with lots of roast, brown sugar, and chocolate. The barrel notes rush in with vanilla, whiskey, light wood to remind us that this is no ordinary stout. Lingering roasty alcohol lasts long after every sip. Thick body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy creamy mouthfeel. This one while tasty seemed to be the least integrated flavor wise and had quite a harsh alcohol presence.

Bottle @ Matt’s house, courtesy of arminjewell. Thanks! Pours a black appearance with a dark brown head. Rich roasty chocolate malty, light coffee, somewhat boozy, light toffee, somewhat boozy aroma. Toffee, thick chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, mild turtle candy flavor. Enjoyable but not as good as some of the others.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma has a solid amount of roast and a bit of chocolate. There are some fruit esters, oak and vanilla but there is also quite a bit of alcohol, but I think it's mostly contributed by the whiskey. Pours a dark black with a thick, short, mocha head that recedes quickly. Some good legs but not much lacing. Flavor has moderate roast and chocolate notes. Dark fruit esters and a bit of a raisin ester quality as well. Flavor had a lot of whiskey in it but as it has warmed it has mellowed. A fair amount of alcohol in the finish. Some oak and light vanilla as well mid to late palate. Mouthfeel is very smooth but only medium bodied. Low to medium carbonation and light astringency. Lots of alcohol heat. Overall a pretty nice beer, but the alcohol and whiskey notes are pretty strong. I hope this mellows with time. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2012 bottle (my first 2012 Eclipse of the year). I haven’t had Bernheim in a few years. Thick, very deep mahogany pour, near black, lasting, but small, deep tan head. Pretty good lace, some strong alcohol legs. Deeply nutty, oaky, lightly ashy (as per typical Eclipse) aroma, honey coated nuts and berries, deep alcohol, bourbon like whiskey, light chocolate covered bananas. Muted coffee notes. Flavors are roasty, light chocolate, moderate alcohol, light ash, nougat, whiskey, grainy, vanilla and toasted marshmallows. Medium body. Very pleasant, light roasty acidity. Medium carbonation, pretty decent body (sometimes a complaint I have of this series). Well checked alcohol. Some chocolate icing stickiness lingers as it warms. Tasty as expected, I am looking forward to trying the other variants this year!
