In tribute to Guinness Foreign Extra, a constant through Lanre Bakare’s tales of party and song, we dug into the history of the style – prominent roast barley and black malt profile, dried fruit aromas, and a sweet, rounded body – and fine-tuned it to be a respectful but distinctly Monk take on the style. Expect flavours of coffee, tobacco, and bitter chocolate rounded with notes of sweet caramel, molasses, and sweet cherry.

Can at the farmers boy St Albans. A jet black coloured pour with a lasting mid tan head. Aroma is earthy roast, liquorice, salt, jammy dried fruit, raisin. Tangy dried fruit. Rich cakey malts.. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, rich chocolate, fruit cake, raspberry ripple, raisins, earthy roast, light tang. Palate is semi sweet, rounded, meaty roast creamy, moderate carbonation. Nice. Super rich.

440ml can bought at Vinmonopolet City Nord. The oily pour reveals a pitch black body under a thick tan-coloured head, dotted spots on the glass. Pretty nice smell of roasted dark malts, cocoa added by scent of berry skins. Dark berries dominates the taste profile, additional hints of bread, liquorice and some spices. Lightly roasted ending with black berries. Mouth filling. Quite alright, far from great though. (Bodø Panorama 14.08.2021).

19JUL2021. 44cl Blik van De Laat. Zwarte kleur, beige-bruine kraag. Mokka, gebrande mout, koffie, licht fruitig, wat bosvruchten, pure chocolade, behoorlijk straffe bittere finish. Volle body, romig. Een ode aan de geroosterde smaken. Erg lekker.

440ml can. Jet black colour with minimally late awakening, average to huge, thick, dense, creamy, moderately to mostly lasting, moderately lacing, brown head. Sweet-ish, chocolately, dark malty aroma, notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, a Hefeweizen-like touch of wheat and banana, whiffs of chili and chipotle, Mettwurst, exotic coffee, maybe some blueberry. Taste is mildly bitter, roasty and chocolately, dark malty, some hop bitterness as well, notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, orange flavoured chocolate, whiffs of chili and chipotle (without any effect of pepperiness), pork sausage, exotic coffee, a touch of blueberry. Oily to viscous texture, cloying palate, fine, soft carbonation. Not really satisfying: some unfamiliar flavours (neutral rating here: always nice to find something new [+], hard to describe, elusive, not really inspiring [-]) - meh!

Rocky foamed head left a collar on a dark brown still body. Malt, berry & chocolate aroma. Medium bodied, smooth with a tingly back. Malt, tobacco, light smoke, berry, coffee & intensely bitter tastes. It's a good one
