Imperial Oatmeal Stout with Coffee, Cacao, and Vanilla Aged in Bourbon Barrels

Coffee Cacao Vanilla Barrel-Aged Dark Star is a blend of 24, 18, 12, and 8-month Bourbon Barrel-Aged Dark Star in 7-12-year old Kentucky bourbon barrels. This special edition adds coffee, cacao, and vanilla with the roasted and chocolate malts to complement the smooth oats and bring you a stout delight wrapped in the gentle embrace of bourbon barrel-aged warmth. A touch of sweetness dances in balance with the hops to finish with a wave, and then she’s gone.

Down & Dirty: 2-Row Pale, Roast Barley, Crystal-60, Chocolate, and Carafa-2 malts with Flaked Oats and Columbus, Willamette, and Cascade hops with coffee, cacao, and vanilla.

Dark brown. Medium brown head. Nutty aroma with a fair bit of vanilla to it, and some light roastiness. On the palate, this is pretty thick, and has a touch of acidity. There's a fair bit of sweetness to it. The vanilla is gentle and nice, with a rich coffee accent. A bit tart, and I think that's because of the coffee.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose is decadent, with loads of intense coffee and bourbon barrels upfront, followed by a little vanilla and cocoa. Flavour is rich and decadent, with intense coffee upfront, followed by bourbon barrels, and with subtle accents of vanilla and cocoa. That's a lot of coffee and bourbon — doesn't seem all that different from the Coffee Dark Star. Viscous, rich palate, but far from abrasive and cloying. Lovely.

Bottle shared at Lazy Sunday THT. Black with light tan ring head. Sweet deep and dry roasted chocolate malts, cinnamon, coffee, cocoa, coconut, vanilla. Massive sweet and bitter, boozy knuckles, nice roasted malts, leathery dry roastiness. Very tasty.

Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Black with light brown head. Lots of coffee, cocoa, dry oak, earthy roasted malts, vanilla, hazelnuts, bourbon, toffee. Solid sweet and over medium bitter. Full bodied. Nice balance, not too sweet, but also not too much bourbon. Good!

Bottle, 650 ml shared with Miro B, Max and Zec. Black with tan head. Chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, bourbon. Smooth. Medium bodied. Balanced, but missing bit of a kick other BA Fremonts had.

Flaska från Hopt, 2021. Svart med beige krona. Kaffe, kakaonibs, mörk choklad, kex, vaniljwafers, vanilj. Kaffetonerna drar kanske något åt grön paprika, men tar inte överhanden. Beska och bitterhet från både kakaon och kaffet. Bourbon, fat.

Waxed bomber. Aroma has notes of coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, dark bread, leather, tobacco, licorice. Pours like motor oil with a half finger dark tan head that falls into a ring quickly. Taste has a moderate sweetness tempered by significant dark chocolate and black coffee-like bitterness. Lovely velvety mouthfeel. Way less sweet than I was expecting, which is welcome. It's a great beer, but I find the whole overall impression a little lacking compared to other Fremont barrel-aged beers I've had in the past. Or maybe I'm just getting burnt out on pastry stouts. I dunno.
