From the jungles of Jamaica to the barrel room at Firestone Walker Brewing Company comes Dark & Stormy—an exotic mashup of Helldorado and Velvet Merkin aged in rum barrels with a touch of hand-zested lime and ginger. Like its namesake cocktail, Dark & Stormy combines a rich sunset color with spicy rum goodness. Helldorado (blonde barleywine, 80%) sets the tone with its signature honey-coconut character, while Velvet Merkin (oatmeal stout, 20%) rounds out the blend with a hint of rich roastiness. Both beers were aged in barrels sourced from a leading Jamaican rum producer, imbuing Dark & Stormy with delectable rum qualities unlike anything Firestone Walker has offered before.

Pours clear ruby-tinged mahogany into a tulip. Off-white head with good retention recedes leaving trailing sheets to coat surface. Rum, lime and ginger aromas. Thick with dark caramel and ginger upfront turning to oak and hot buttered rum before the lasting citrus and resin finish. I love a Dark n' Stormy and this does a very good job replicating one...not sure that's entirely necessary, though...

Draught @ Bridge View Tavern (11/19/18). Clear reddish brown with small frothy beige head, woodsy rum aroma, adequate carbonation, sweetish spicy rum taste with woodsy background, smooth body, long finish. Quite potent and a bit boozy.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper with a tan head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma is quite boozy with a strong rum note with a bit of lime, sweet grain and ginger underlying. Flavor has sweet grains and bread with a strong rum note supporting, ginger and light lime backing.

Pours a dark, deep, rich leather-brown, with minimal head. Aromas of rum, ginger, lime--kind of a fruity mix. Flavor pretty much follows, along with some smooth oak flavor and a hit of anise/licorice. Booze is quite apparent in the nose and in the flavor--this is one to sip. Nice kind of after dinner treat.
