From the jungles of Jamaica to the barrel room at Firestone Walker Brewing Company comes Dark & Stormy—an exotic mashup of Helldorado and Velvet Merkin aged in rum barrels with a touch of hand-zested lime and ginger. Like its namesake cocktail, Dark & Stormy combines a rich sunset color with spicy rum goodness. Helldorado (blonde barleywine, 80%) sets the tone with its signature honey-coconut character, while Velvet Merkin (oatmeal stout, 20%) rounds out the blend with a hint of rich roastiness. Both beers were aged in barrels sourced from a leading Jamaican rum producer, imbuing Dark & Stormy with delectable rum qualities unlike anything Firestone Walker has offered before.

Tap. Ruby color with white head. Aroma is raisins, booze, caramel, vanilla, ginger yeah, but I don't really get the lime. Taste is rum soaked raisins, full on, not much more. Oily mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Quite harsh.

Sample at MBCC 2018. Poured a clear chestnut brown colour witn a bubbly round white head. The aroma is treacle toffee caramel malt, alcohol, light woody hop. The flavour is moderate sweet with a smooth, rich, oily, toffee malt, light sweet fruit, warm alcohol, light spicy, light woody hop bitter palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. One for a cold winter night in front of a roaring fire!

Draft/Fest. A- Ginger, lime, caramel, mild rum. A- Copper color, clear liquid, white head. T- Ginger, lime, caramel, playdoh. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- I recently had a similar type of beer from Boulevard that turned out okay. This kind of followed suit. Tasted about like a dark and stormy would expect the rum aging wasn't too forward here. In fact, I wish it would have been a bit more so. Doesn't feel like 13.5% at all. A fair amount of ginger and lime flavors that they balanced well enough that it worked.
