Bottle, courtesy of Toni Fluekiger, many thanks! Pours cloudy brown with a medium head. Aroma is strong barley, slightly citric (peel), sweet and boozy. Heavy, sweet and boozy. Stocky, low carbonation. Palate is long and sweet, continuing the nice flavours. Warming, strong, but really well drinkable through a great balance.

Takeout cup from CBM Koenji. Toasted malt, bread and citrus on the nose. A bit of caramel and faint cacao on the palate. Well-balanced, with some sweetness on the palate and some light bitterness. Sweet finish with a touch of booze. Fairly decent, but that’s about it.

Tap at Yona Yona Beer Works in Omotesando. I don’t think this needs a separate yearly entry... Hare no hi sennin pours an opaque orange copper with a sweet citrus orange aroma.  Fairly full bodied and big hoppy orange and nutty maltiness. Pretty good, I’m glad to try it at 750¥ rather than getting a 3000¥ bottle.

(Bottle, swing top and crown cap, 0.75, at Koht, 20150926) The beer poured brown and rather clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had sweetness and booze. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, vanilla, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet. A very sweet brew with too much booze as well.

Tap at the Gifu Beer Matsuri 2015. Cloudy orange-re-brown color, low head. Treacly nose, raisins. Sweet caramel and treacle flavor, dried fruits, toffee. Rich, full flavor, though body is a bit light. Sweet as expected from this beer. Decent though not great.

Sampled at Asahiya with a group of others. Brewed in 2010, released in February 2012. Dark amber-brown with a bit of lace. Big caramel malt nose, raisin, dried plums. Sweet and rich with little hop character and also alcohol very well hidden. Tasty malt showcase, though a bit unbalanced. Rich, textured caramel, raisins. Well integrated due to aging. Probably nearly the same recipe as their earlier Toshi’s English Barley Wines. Very English. Ridiculously expensive, though, at ¥3,150.
