Spirited and celebratory, this beer revelry commemorates the arrival of July 21st – Belgian National Day. Fermented with our house yeast and dry-hopped with bright, citrusy Mandarina Bavaria, this lively Belgian-style tripel will bring color to your cheeks and pair beautifully with all the waffles, mussels and frites you choose to consume. Santé – cheers – here’s to another 189 years.

Deep orange and copper coloured body with a thinnish off-white head, about two centimetres tall that fades fairly quickly and leaves a small, subtle lace on the sides. Aroma of hay, grass, flowers, a ton of yeast and wheat with a lot of coriander seed and especially curacao notes with a big alcohol scent as well - very nice and pungent throughout. Full-bodied; Strong grassy and floral aspects show at first with a lot of peppery and dry notes with a lot of pungency, in terms of alcohol and strength, with a lot of the yeast and body with a bunch of herbal and especially wheatie notes with the coriander seed and curacao quite pungent throughout. Aftertaste shows the wheat, yeast, flowers and alcohol with a lot of pungency and warmth, but a subtle character and slightly easy-drinking profile that hits nicely and about what you'd expect for the style. Overall, a fairly standard tripel with a nice yeast characteristic that hits the floral and especially honey/wheat/coriander seed nicely with a light bitterness and spicey peppery bite that gives some complexity, but fairly easy-drinking aspects. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle, purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria (Little River Turnpike), Virginia on 12-September-2020 for US$4,29 sampled at my house here in Washington on 19-May-2021.

Bottle from my neighborhood Whole Foods - light hazy medium gold - moderately sweet nose, with notes of white pepper, banana, clove - flavor is appropriately sweet for the style, perhaps a bit over, but the dry hopping presents a balancing bitterness - floral hops, a light earthy, dusty yeast character - some clove and pepper through the middle - warming finish - I don’t usually care for renditions of this style that are quite so estery, but this one pulls it off well.

Pour is a hazy bronze with a large white head. Aroma is bubblegum yeast ester and some white sugar. Flavor is floral and herbal with some strong orange and then follows the yeast ester. Alcohol is here also in a noticeable way. If there was an American brewer that was going to make a Belgian tripel you could do no wrong looking to Ommegang. This one was pretty good. Very herbal and spicy.
