California Gray Whales (Eschrichtius robustus) endure the longest migration of any mammal on earth, 10,000–12,000 miles round trip, between their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic and their winter calving lagoons in Baja California. Twice each year, these gentle giants swim past our doorstep here on the Mendocino Coast, affording us a priceless up-close look at spouts and flukes just beyond the surf, connecting us in an essential way to them and their epic voyage. Laguna Baja refers collectively to the termini of the whales’ southern migration—the placid waters of Baja’s San Ignacio Lagoon, Ojo De Liebre Lagoon, and Magdalena Bay.
Laguna Baja is a classically styled Vienna lager (in the Mexican mode), rich dark amber, with a malty aroma and a full, creamy body.

On tap clear mahogany pour thin fine tan head. Smooth toasted malts in the aroma and flavor. Woody and slight brown sugar notes. Very nice.

12 oz bottle from Brewers Haven. Medium brown body, clear, foamy head dissipates to a tight ring. Aroma is toasted malts, brown sugar. Taste brings mild sweetness, which falls kind of flat leaving a dull bitterness on the palate. I expected more flavor from these guys.

On tap at the brewery pours out a crisp clean amber topped with a sand head. Nose is light grain some grassy hops. Taste is more of the nice sweet grain light grassy hops and a spice.

I have to go to the west coast to get a sampling of this Mexican style lager. All okay. I found a single of Laguna Baja at a Total Wine in Palm Springs, CA. I have to pour it into a plastic cup, pathetic I know. It delivers a nice amber red body with a small circle of light tan bubbles. The scent? Grain and slightly astringent. The taste is malty with more of the grain, wheat bread, a touch of caramel. Decent. Wish I had a slice of lime to add, could only make it better.

Amber with off white head - Malt aroma with some caramel - Malt body with some notes of caramel and roasted malt and some fruity tones from hops in the back - the malt with caramel flavours goes into the finish with hints of hops - This was nice

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours very dark - ruddy against strong light - with beige or light tan head. Aroma is very mildly roasty malt. Med body or nearly. Flavor is very mildly roasty malt with some light bitterness. Hop? Malt is confusing that in the flavors. It's ok for what it is. Not dry and only lightly bitter. Likely good for sloshing down food.
