Taster at ZH taproom. Dark brown pour, collar of beige head. Aroma brings an odd sweet note, maple syrup. This goes away in the taste, but the roastiness is faint, and not bitter enough.

500 ml bottle purchased and enjoyed at The Beer Mongers in Portland, Oregon. The pour is an opaque black with a well formed ½ inch light tan head. The aroma is soft smoke, roast, light char and some dark chocolate notes. The taste is a gentle blend of the roast malt, the soft sweetness and earth pine bitterness. The palate is medium to light bodied, active carbonation and the dry crisp finish. Super drinkable.

On tap at Zoiglhaus, pours a deep dark brown / black with a small beige head. Aroma brings out dry toasted malt, some roast, and light smoke. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted malt, a little smoke, and some roast. Well-constructed, with a smoky dry, toasted malt finish.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a dark brown color with a medium tan head. A big nose of oats, chocolate and light roast. The flavor is mild toasted malts, dark bread, some light sweet dark chocolates. Solid. Very drinkable as all their beers seem to be.
