Hugo is named for my wife’s grandfather, Hugo Effenberger, who moved to Tillamook County from Germany in 1883. Hugo displays strong malt character, with earth, anise and chocolate notes, and a slightly sweet finish. This lager can complement any number of dishes, from salads to cheese to chicken. Released at Thanksgiving. (1.021 BG, 6.25%, 33 IBU, 20 SRM) Available only at Market of Choice

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours light brown with a slight tan heat. Aroma is complex. I can find anise and chocolate. And light caramel. Med body. Flavor is the aroma with some smoke. Pleasant drink.

Pours a deep brown, just a bit reddish. Medium-sized beige head. Liquid is quite transparent. Head seems to stick around for a bit, doesn’t leave a lot of bubbles on the glass. Lots of bready malt in the aroma. It’s a big rich grain flavor that stays away from sweeter notes. Toasty. Some caramel but in a not terribly sugary way. Cinnamon, unsweetened cocoa, earth, mushroom. Some spice, maybe a little grass. Mild fruit. Pretty good dose of nutty malt character. The taste is relatively dry for a bock, at least in my experience with the style. Pretty much follows the aroma. Bready malt with toasty, nutty flavors. More of that woody cinnamon stick flavor. Finishes fairly dry caramel note. Just a faint touch of coffee. Mouthfeel is light but full and a bit creamy from somewhat gentle carbonation. Very nice beer.

Dark brown with fluffy, airy beige head, that lasts. Faint aroma of sweet malt, taste is bit stronger, some sweetness, and light bitterness. Dry and bitter finish.

Bottle. Pours clear auburn, medium creamy tan head, dissipates slowly with nice lacing. Aroma is nutty, caramel, toffee. Flavor follows, lots of malts, earthy indeed, some chocolate, a fair amount of acidity. Light sweet and light bitterness, although the far finish gathers some bitter notes. Medium light body, medium carbonation, finish is harsh; acidic and bitter.

Bottle. Pours with a hazed deep bronze hued body with a large and retentive off-white head. Good lace. Aromas of dark fruit, fig and chocolate from a distance. Closer inspection reveals buckwheat honey, melanoidins, toasty, chocolate, earthy, bready, biscuity, saltine crackers. Multigrain loaf. Clean yeast wise. Moderately bitter. Bready, biscuity, chocolate, earthy, mild roast edge, anise. Medium melanoidins. Earthy, a bit nutty (nut shells). Light fruit (fig/date). A bit too much bitterness/roast. Clean otherwise. Medium to medium high carbonation, medium bodied with a dry finish. Good.
