On a recent trip through Belgium visiting the monastery breweries, we discovered an excellent barrel aged ale that had an incredibly satisfying flavor combination. Aging in oak barrels added a memorable richness, that we seek to achieve with this barrel aged Belgian-style barley wine-style ale. Being the ideal celebration beer to release on our 5-year anniversary, Barrel Aged Naked Evil is fermented with both British and Belgian yeasts and aged in whiskey barrels for a lightly spicy twist on this old-world beer style. Sweet malt flavors will become smoother and rich dark fruit characters will build with time to add a wonderful complexity and depth of flavor.

650ml bottle @ PBF IX

Vertical with Sweet Evil - Pours dark orange with a smooth head, slightly darker than Sweet Evil. Aroma of caramely malts, toffee, wood, oak, vanilla, yeast, whiskey and ripe fruits. Taste is sweet, woody, oaky, caramely and stuffy with notes of vanilla, toffee and ripe fruits. Finish is sweet, sticky and woody with oaky notes, vanilla, toffee and ripe fruits. Sweeter than Sweet Evil, but in a different way, and this has more body and is more complex, so I prefer this.

22 ounce bottle into snifter; batch 1, bottled in 8/2011. Pours lightly cloudy ruby red color with a small fairly dense light khaki head with decent retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, raisin, prune, pear, apple, molasses, toast, vanilla, toffee, oak, clove, whiskey, herbal, light pepper, light coconut, and oak/yeast earthiness. Incredible aromas with awesome complexity and balance of dark malt, whiskey barrel, and moderate yeast ester notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, raisin, prune, pear, apple, molasses, toast, toffee, vanilla, oak, clove, whiskey, herbal, light coconut, and oak/yeast earthiness. Zero bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, molasses, raisin, prune, pear, apple, toast, brown bread, toffee, vanilla, oak, clove, whiskey, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity of dark malt, yeast ester, and whiskey barrel flavors; with a fantastic malt/yeast/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that is fantastic. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an insane barrel aged barleywine! All around incredible complexity and balance of dark malt, yeast ester, and whiskey barrel flavors; and extremely smooth to sip on for the big ABV. An extremely amazing offering.

Location: 22 oz bottle from dbarnold, 10/6/13

Aroma: The nose is sweet and boozy, dark fruit, bourbon, caramel, and a little molasses
Appearance: It pours a clearish orange color with a pretty no head or lace
Flavor: Heavy sweet, with molasses, caramel, and dark fruit, booze is lighter than in the nose
Palate: The body is full, it is quite sticky, with a fairly flat feel, and a lengthy, sweet finish
Overall Impression: So over-the-top sweet and sticky that it is kind of difficult to drink. I wouldn't want a full bomber of this for sure. As something to split, it is alright, but not an out-and-out winner for me.

Pours a ruddy coppy, with no head, only a little effervescence. Aroma is a touch oaky and mostly malty, sugary caramel fruit malts. Flavor starts sweet with a raisiny sweet malt, with a strong oaky middle, finish is sweet with a lingering tannic oakiness, and a long bitterness after. Strangely light in palate for the ABV, apparently very well attenuated and I’m guessing might have used sugar to boost the ABV. Basically comes across as an oaky quad and its fair in that respect. Calling it a barleywine is a bit misleading (except for a relatively high bittering hop). But then again, quads are something like belgian barleywines. OK, so its a highly hopped barrel aged quad.

22 oz. bottle, sent from jmikolich (thanks a lot, Jim), pours a cloudy orangey amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of light barrels, green apples, caramel and candied sugar. Flavour brings out a more moderated profile, with the sweetness toned down by the whiskey; the apples are still there, but again are moderated. The sweetness is not as prominent as in Sweet Evil, but still quite present. More complex than the base beer, but still not the most elegant barley wine out there. Decent stuff, but overrated.

Bottle as shown. Pours a clear copper orange with a small white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is caramel and brown sugar. Medium mouthfeel with sweett vanilla and light roasted malt with booze in the finish. Easy to drink a very impressive barley wine from Hoppin Frog.

Hazy amber beer, tidy cream coloured head. Semi dry palate. Fine carbonation. Sweet malt with pronounced dried banana and a little sweet caramel. Oaky vanilla and a little bourbon which is very sweet. Finishes with aniseed alcohol and alcohol heat. Pretty well joined up, a sweet barleywine. Banana!

0.65l bottle tasted with The Tasting Crew, kindly shared by Gunnar. Big thanks Gunnar! This is a glowing warm-amber colored one, some blurriness and it has a really heavy lacing off-white top. Lovely vanilla, woody and caramel sweet sticky aroma, some raisins and concentrated passion fruit juice. Fantastic.. Oh, the flavor? Lovely! So balanced and refined! Sweet dates, figs, gooseberries, red currants and just plain old sweetness. what a refined and fantastic tasty barley. I could drink this all day long. 26.10.2012 8-4-8-4-17

0.65l bottle. A lovely deep rich amber color on this one and the beer itself is filled with lots of big floaters floating about in the glass. The head is quickly islandy, beige in color and thinly sidesticking. This is how a Barley wine should smell. So thick, sweet and malt rich. Been a long time I've had a proper barley now, so have been looking forward to this. It's both nutty yeasty and malty sweet on the nose. Lots of vanilla, some strong fruity yeasty tones and a little bit of smoke also present here. Smells amazing! Oh boy it's sweet and malty this! Absolutely packed with sweet vanilla in the taste! Thick and chewy - almost as a drinking liquefied caramel on the mouthfeel and the carbonation level is as expected soft and prickling on the tongue. Prickling is also the warming alcohol. Lots of boiled down concentrated red berries and fruits. It's a Strong, powerful and delicious sipper. One bottle is more than enough to last you several hours! 16.08.2013

Pours deep clear amber into a snifter. Bubbly head quickly recedes to hug rim. Sweet toffee, oak and whiskey aromas. Thick with vanilla, banana and caramel upfront turning to whiskey and oak before the lasting, slightly cloying banana finish.
