On a recent trip through Belgium visiting the monastery breweries, we discovered an excellent barrel aged ale that had an incredibly satisfying flavor combination. Aging in oak barrels added a memorable richness, that we seek to achieve with this barrel aged Belgian-style barley wine-style ale. Being the ideal celebration beer to release on our 5-year anniversary, Barrel Aged Naked Evil is fermented with both British and Belgian yeasts and aged in whiskey barrels for a lightly spicy twist on this old-world beer style. Sweet malt flavors will become smoother and rich dark fruit characters will build with time to add a wonderful complexity and depth of flavor.

Bomber from bittermestupid. Thanks again Greg! Pours clear dark copper with a transient beige smear. Aroma is subtle. Light fruit, light caramel, light brown sugar. Rather complicated and simple all at once. Full bodied. Very mild carb. Flavor is like thick sweet fruit with some wood hints. Then a little spice breaks out. In some ways it’s like sipping Southern Comfort. In other ways it’s like drinking meade. The heat is barely discernible tho. The main thing seems to be a light spiciness permeating every sip. There’s a lot to it, but subtle complexity seems appropriately descriptive. Really appreciate that it’s not overly brown sugary. That’s probably what suggests sipping whiskey.

Smell is sweet with sweet dark bread, roasted coconut, bourbon, vanilla fudge, alcohol, banana bread, caramel, toffee, lemon hard candy, pine, lemon zest, orange zest, white pepper and resinous wood. Taste is sweet and malty with caramel, vanilla fudge, orange zest, roasted coconut, alcohol, banana bread, cookie dough, unripe mango, unripe peaches, pine, pine, toffee, bourbon, dry wood and alcohol. Mouthfeel is smooth, round, tiny sticky sweet, slightly boozy and full bodied. Finish is sweet and malty with caramel, roasted coconut, vanilla fudge, orange zest, fresh grass and cookie dough. Very nice.

Small offwhite head. Clear deep amber body. Earthy caramelly vinous aroma with honey, vanilla and paper notes. Dry-sweet perfumy vanilla fudge and raspberry taste with peppery butterscotch notes. Hot mouthfeel. Mid-to-full body. Dryish vanilla caramel and honey aftertaste with maize, pepper and earth notes. Some butterscotch, too. Nice, interesting, and unusual, but a bit perfumy. (0.65l bottle from Kihoskh, Copenhagen. Bought 12 months ago.)

Bottle at chriso Vintage Tasting. Pours clear, orange-gold with a small, white head. Heavy bread, honey, toast and hard alcohol in the nose. Ultra sweet flavor, big notes of caramel, honey, vanilla, whiskey, candy. Full bodied with average carbonation. Warm finish, big sugar, brown sugar, more whiskey and vanilla, some wood, honey, cake, ripe fruits. A real sipper. Quite ballsy and big. I would only want a few ounces of this, but what I had I really enjoyed.

Bottle at Chriso’s Fullers-Gales Tasting. It pours golden amber, with a thin white head. The nose is gingerbread, toffee, syrup, melon, pear, banana, apple and pear drops. The taste is sweet - pear, melon, apple, sugary, banana, caramel, honey and wood. Full body, moderate carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Very sweet stuff indeed, but decent in small quantities.
