Danish ‘hazy’ wheat IPA, bottle from Gedeelde Vreugde. Snow white, cobweb-lacing, thick and frothy, stable head on a metallic ‘old gold’ coloured beer with orangey tinge. Aroma of dried orange zest, honey, meringue, dried peach, breakfast cereals, dried ginger, straw, withered lettuce, banana, hay, tea, green peppercorns, wet cardboard. Sweet onset with banana, peach and stewed apple aspects, slick wheatiness, medium carbonation, supple body, smooth; sugarbready maltiness leading to a drier, spicier finish with late, bit rooty, withered kitchen herb- and citrus peel-ish hop bitterness strangely lacking in aromatic expression and longevity for anything labelled as IPA these days; meanwhile the yeast adds light ‘shoe box’ and hayish funkiness but in an equally subdued way. Ends too sweet, as such not abnormal for a hazy IPA, but dramatically lacking in the aromatic fragrance I expect from one and in that sense falling a bit flat in the end – in a blind tasting, I could easily have confused this with some hoppy Belgian style blonde rather than ‘true’ Anglo-Saxon style IPA… Weird, but age probably has a lot to do with it, as this bottle has clearly passed its prime.
