Copper colour with thin head. This IPA has a slight hint of sweet spice behind the earthy, resinous hops. Perhaps from the wood.

Just far too astringent and harsh. Like a british cask ale that’s been far too bittered without body to back it. Beer temple ams

Hazy dark orange with a white head. Aroma is fairly woody upfront with citrus, fruity hops and caramel malt. Moderate sweet and above moderate bitter. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Jai Alai is near the top in my ratings of IPAs, pretty happy to have this version to sample. The only unfortunate thing I can say beforehand is that the born on date indicates June 29, 2020, not optimal. We shall see. I think I got the 12 oz can at the local craft beer store, unsure of that presently. My heavy bar glass with a handle is being used, cooled off in the fridge. The appearance after the pour is in one word, impressive. A semi-transparent, dark gold liquid with a healthy, creamy head of off-white foam. And I will call the carbonation vigorous. An understatement. The nose is lightly citrus veering to tropical with the hops working through. Finally I take a drink. Lemon with some grapefruit too, woody, spicy in an interesting way and just the barest bit of sweetness accompanying a moderate bitterness. Tasty. I think this surpasses the base Jai Alai.

Deep and perfectly clear dark copper and bronze coloured body with a large four centimetre tall tan head that fades into larger bubbles on top after a few seconds. Aroma of deep piney, floral and grassy hops with a pungent dry woodsie flavour (perhaps the cedar?) With a strong malt backbone, some light sweetness as caster sugar and a deeper earthy, nutty and rustic scent at the end. Medium-bodied; Strong deep malty, grainy, earthy and deep woodsy, definite cedar notes that show a very pungent malt-side of the equation with some assertive simcoe and English (read lower alpha acids and more earthy) hops coming through and giving a nice balance towards the end. Aftertaste shows the deeper grain, a good deal of hops (while not bitter, do show character) and a lot of the super dry, woodsy and bitter cedar - very nice as some who enjoys cedar! Overall, a nice lighter hopped beer, but the malt and especially in vessel used to age or flavour the beer has done wonders, much better (in my opinion) than the white oaked version. Great to try, especially freshish, unless for some reason the cedar would amplify over time, but I couldn't imagine that happening in a can. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from the Department of Beer and Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 21-August-2020 for US$3,43 sampled at my house here in Washington on 17-September-2020.
