Twee jaar terug kwam David Rogiers bij ons langs. Ex Struise medewerker en fervent adept van artisanaal bier, bracht ons een lot mooie Geneverbarrels uit België en vroeg ons deze te willen vullen met een krachtig bier. Wat dacht je nou zelf, de Kill & Destroy natuurlijk. De tijd was nog maar eens rijp om een nieuwe variant te maken, de Tora Tora zag zo het licht. Tora Tora is Japans en zou voor Bliksem verrassing staan. Het Struise label mag dan ook met enige fierheid het logo "Holy Beer House" dragen, dit is het reeds super bekende merk van David.

A light haze on this amber beer, small bubbly pale tan head. Nose is pure barleywine creamy caramel toffee malts along with a little toffee liqueur. Strong! Palate is smooth and inevitably slightly viscous but there is good fine minerally carbonation preventing that prevents this from getting anywhere near lumpen. Malts follow the nose but with the intensity much elevated. There are sweet nutty flavours mixed in. A touch of super sweet coffee. Quality brandy. Mild estery sweetness that blends in to pear accentuated dried fruits. Back end finds more sweet caramel and toffee with a touch of fig. Spicy finish. Mostly alcohol spice I think but maybe a touch of hop spice as well. Spicy linger goes on and on. Hugely complex and rightly so. A beer of this strength should be delivering an array of brewed out flavours and this one does it with aplomb. Wish I had purchased another to squirrel away for some years. Forget the hoppy attribution of this one, it's a barleywine pure and simple and it's a rather spiffing one at that! Struise without the nonsense or ruinous expense. Welcome back!

Tap. Hazy golden color with white head. Aroma is cheesy hops, barrel sugars, intense. Taste is the same, sweet nectar, sugary. Almost cloying, hopbitter in the back. Oily mouthfeel, almost flat. Whoa.

Panda 🐼 at home thanks to Wingman. A mostly clear amber orange coloured pour with a loose beigehead. Aroma is chewy toffee, raisin loaf, sticky pine needles, bark. Flavour is composed of chewy malts, toffee, resinous piney hop, dried fruits, boozy, fruit cake. light oak, Palate is medium sweet, chewy, mellow carbonation. Firm bitterness.

Panda at home, thanks to the Wingman, 29/04/22. Murky amber to chestnut brown with a moderate light beige cap that veers edgwards. Nose is tangy dried fruits, funk, spice, red berry must, dap oak, herbals, caramel. Taste comprises caramel, soured fruits, mellow bourbon, herb, botanicals, spice, grains, sweet and soured red berries, glazed cherries. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close spiked with mellow bourbonics and a balanced rising boost. Fun sipper though I'm not sure I'd go a whole load of this.

An amber beer, a head is very small and blond. Aroma has caramel, bourbon, bralle, overriped fruits. Taste has caramel, raisin, dry barrel, maybe there is also bitterness. Full bodied. Surprisingly easy to enjoy even alc.% is huge. Interesting.
