Twee jaar terug kwam David Rogiers bij ons langs. Ex Struise medewerker en fervent adept van artisanaal bier, bracht ons een lot mooie Geneverbarrels uit België en vroeg ons deze te willen vullen met een krachtig bier. Wat dacht je nou zelf, de Kill & Destroy natuurlijk. De tijd was nog maar eens rijp om een nieuwe variant te maken, de Tora Tora zag zo het licht. Tora Tora is Japans en zou voor Bliksem verrassing staan. Het Struise label mag dan ook met enige fierheid het logo "Holy Beer House" dragen, dit is het reeds super bekende merk van David.

Bottle. Color: Lightly hazy reddish copper, very thin beige head. Aroma: Boozy, sweetish, caramel, vanilla. Taste: Sweetish, caramel, boozy, grassy hop notes, spicy, juniper, some vanilla, dark fruit and oak wood, 'boterbabbelaars'. A bit sirupy. Boozy, but not as alcoholic as you would expect with 18%. Starting over moderate sweet, finishing more to the bitter side, over moderate dry bitterness. Not one of the best beers I've had, but certainly one of the more interesting beers. And also not bad at all.

An appreciation for barrel aged beers of most any kind. Time to see how Tora Tora stacks up. My 33 cl bottle came from Belgian Happiness, glad to get it from them. Cap lifted, pouring into the snifter of choice this evening, Buffalo Bayou's glass. I see an opaque, caramel brown liquid with a bit of taupe foam floating on the top. The smell is fermented fruit, booze and jet fuel. I have a drink and it conjures up memories of 120 Minute, a beer I liked and still like considerably. Tora Tora is similar, fruit, alcohol, cough syrup, white bread and hard candy with some heat. 300 IBUs, hard to believe that. Little of an IPA presence but that seems to be the case with these high abv brews. I came prepared, like this a lot.

Bottled 330ml. -at Valhalla Zagreb, shared with Marko. Brownish coloured, minimal off-white head, caramel alcohol and dried fruits in the nose. Sweet malty, fruity, dried fruits, caramel and some alcohol with bitterish sweet finish. 2019 Vintage.

Bottle at Valhalla ZG at the polar bear tasting, shared with Ogi. Murky reddish-brown body, off-white head. Citric candy in the surprisingly fresh seeming caramelly aroma with light flowery notes. Lean taste, caramel, flowery, light fruit, some alcohol - but not overwhelming, at least not at this temperature. Bitterish finish. Elegant for the percentage. Another one that's pleasant and not exactly inviting at the same time.
